March 9, 20179 yr Anybody got a good source for wood in NKY? Not looking for just dimensional birch or pine lumber, but somebody that has a little selection of some hardwoods (maple, oak, walnut, etc.). Don't need anything too exotic, but just looking for more than what the box stores offer.

April 26, 20179 yr One of the things my wife has said she'd like is another wooden cutting board (our previous one was a wedding present 20 years ago and has seen better days). So my son and I talked about it, and we've decided to make her one for Mother's Day. (Or at least try!) Not going to get too elaborate with an end-grain pattern (although they look really cool!), but will mix it up with some different types and widths of wood. I've come up with a couple of patterns and figure that I can actually get two boards out of the wood that we'll have to buy, so I told him we can each make one for our moms. Fingers crossed they come out looking good!

April 26, 20179 yr Going to go with walnut, cherry and maple. That should make for a nice color variation. Some folks say to be careful with walnut. There is a slight potential for tree nut alergies. If you oil it well you will be fine. I always use salad bowl oil for food use wood.

I always use salad bowl oil for food use wood. There's never been anyone to our house (or to my parents', that I'm aware of) who's mentioned anything about nut allergies. So, not going to worry about that now. As to the finish...I've seen people recommend straight mineral oil. While others say mineral oil, but mixed with beeswax. Others say the salad bowl finish, and I've even seen some say to cut the salad bowl finish with some more mineral oil. Ay caramaba!
May 11, 20179 yr Got the material over Friday and Saturday, then cut on Sunday. But, death of our cat has forced us to miss two days since. Finally got to do the glue-up tonight. Everything went okay, with the exception that I didn't get the squeeze out I was looking for from every intersection on the one cutting board. A little nervous about that. Guess we'll see what we have when we take the clamps off tomorrow and begin sanding.
May 11, 20179 yr Taking off next Thursday and Friday to start on my yard barn. Going to build a 10x10 with a gambrel roof.
