I apologize if this has already been addressed, but even if students are allowed to go to the school they want, does the KHSAA have the authority to not allow that student to play athletics at that school?

Thanks, didn't it say the state and federal funding would follow the student if they moved? If so wouldn't that 40% go with them?

Do you really think XYZ suburban high performing district wants to take gang member no credits 16 year old from low performing XYZ urban district. No way. Why do you think the feds from both parties threw lots of $$ at urban districts and somewhat isolated rural districts (when we all know $$ won't solve their main problems)? Because they wouldn't have to deal with them and could stay segregated socioeconomically.

What I'm saying what if all the best basketball players in Fayette go to Dunbar and all of the football players go to Lafayette or Bryan Station the other schools could get really bad quick or say if this passes good players in Lexington could just go to Scott Co. for example. That's what I was saying. Also I think it will really hurt the smaller rural schools who may only have a good team ever so many years like in the 16th region maybe a kid from Menifee or Bath Co. could just go play at Rowan Co. I just personally think it will kill small schools ability to compete.

In general, probably not. But let's say gang member is a drug dealer. Where will that person sell more drugs? XYZ urban poor school or XYZ rich suburban school? There will be some that will want to. If I am school district XYZ suburban district. I will be full and not take anyone, regardless. Most won't, but I wouldn't keeps me less likely to be litigated.

Which is what is supposed to happen now, unless the "Valid Move" is verified then they can play right away.

I don't believe so. I think it means attend your home high school and play or go to out of district school and sit for a year.

That's what I thought. I know I have a friend in Louisville that lives almost walking distance from Fern Creek but he sent his son to Male because of academic and baseball reasons.

 

And I don't foresee the "home" school/magnet set up changing. At least, from what I see in this proposal, not much would change. A child would have a school designation based upon their residence. They can apply to attend another school, and based upon space, be accepted. There is nothing now that prevents the "cherry picking" that people are afraid of. What happens, happens naturally. In the end, I think it's a better way to do things, and I think the fears are a more because it's a largely unknown quantity outside of the metro areas.
