I expect negative recruiting from tools like James Franklin, but not guys I respect as much as Dabo. Urban is only 5 years older than Dabo.

I think it's lame. It allows guys like Carmen to lead OSU on for this whole time up until the early signing day. Then when they move on after he goes somewhere else they can't go after another guy who was behind Carmen on their list because he signed somewhere else. I'm not a fan.

 

Couldn't he have done the same thing with the old Spring Signing Period? I don't see how an extra signing period right after the season is "Lame", in fact it allows kids to make a decision and get it over with. Even with verbal commits other coaches are still after the kids, this way they can really shut it down and get on with their Senior year in school.

In the case of guys like Carmen he would have likely made his decision official before the spring signing period. Giving OSU time to flip another O Lineman. Now OSU can't flip that O lineman because he's likely already committed. It's an extremely selfish reason why I think it's lame. But schools like Bama and OSU have made it an annual thing to flip recruits very late in the process.

I don't know why Carmen would lie about Dabo saying that. I don't know what there is to be gained from that. But yes James Franklin is a total tool and was telling D lineman being recruited by OSU and PSU that OSU's d line coach was going to retire soon.

Texas high school is still playing football as of this week. The top 10 teams in the CFP are preparing for major bowls. Four of which are trying to win a national title. The time to properly evaluate and complete a recruiting roster is drastically diminished. The rule was designed for those small percentage of kids that just absolutely know where they are going to school and want to commit and get it over with. That is a very small percentage. Some kids are sitting out there with a Cincy or Memphis offer and has yet to be properly evaluated by some of the bigger schools. Signing early would keep that kid from getting a bigger offer maybe or some other opportunity that might have opened if they were given time to be properly evaluated. So who is the early signing period benefiting?

Kids have been taking recruiting visits since at least August. Coaches have been watching film on them and recruiting most of them for two years. Even as they prepare for bowls each coaching staff is also out recruiting just like they did when there was just one signing period. If kids in Texas (or anywhere) don't want to sign early they don't have to...but let's not act like the kids don't know the schools and the schools don't know the kids and need more time...both know as much as they need to know.

 

One plus is this is a win for a lot of kids...how many times do coaches "over offer" and end up telling a kid at the last minute we no longer are offering you. Coaches have to be careful as to who they actually offer, because those kids could sign early and lock up those scholarships...when some of them were insurance against losing a higher ranked kid, now they are stuck with them.

I mean, you do realize these poor little schools like Ohio State and Alabama have an entire recruiting department that does nothing but sit in an office and evaluate film 365 days a year, right? Get out of here saying guys haven't been "properly evaluated". They've been evaluated and have been deemed lower on the recruiting board. Terrible take...

It’s over and done with I hope it works out for him. Insane talent, after seeing him play a few times he could end up the #1 overall pick, or Matt Elam benched his senior year. It’s a chance all college coaches would take.

Take into consideration all the coaching changes that have taken place and multiply that times about 10 because of the position coaching changes. How can you have time to evaluate a kid properly. A lot of kids have a good Jr season and not so good Senior season and vice versa.

 

These were some of the issues listed by coaches that chose to speak:

 

Those who have not made enough academic progress to qualify might not be able to sign early with their schools of choice and could see their spots go to less-talented players who are more certain to qualify.

 

Options could also be limited for prospects who are late bloomers.

 

Sometimes, prospects are not discovered until December or January, as programs review senior film. Under the old system, scholarships were not being filled en masse until February. With the new early date, the number of options for late bloomers could decrease.

 

Prospects who feel pressured to sign early could also lose out on offers from bigger schools, if they sign and foreclose the opportunity to wait for better options.

 

Smaller schools are gonna pressure kids to sign immediately.

 

This isn't an Alabama/Ohio State vs the world issue....Why are people so upset about allowing a kid more time to come to a decision?

Again you are ignoring the very clear point I made. Those schools all staff recruiting departments that do nothing but evaluate tape 24/7/365. There are very few, if any, surprises any more. It isn't about being discovered late. It's about having to move down the board after misses. There is less opportunity for the big boys to miss now and then poach from others to cover their rear end. Let's call a spade a spade and not hide behind buzz words and false narratives guys like Saban are perpetuating to push their narrative...

No one is forcing them to decide early, right? If the kid's have the talent, the schools will wait.

Basketball kids can sign before their senior season even starts. Where is the outrage and concern over not even getting to put senior tape out there before a signing period? The big boys don't like this in football for the exact reason I just listed and their reasoning against it is as hollow as it gets...
