The term "pretty uneducated" also applies to the actors in Hollywood, many of whom have no college education whatsoever. (For the record, I will say that you can be smart without having attended college.) However, I get tired of Hollywood types acting as if it's their way or the hghway.

The percentage of poverty in Kentucky is much higher in SE Ky than the rest of the state. It is tied directly to educational levels.

 

Many families left Appalachia in the 50's for factory jobs and better pay and most of those jobs were low skill. Those low skill jobs don't pay any more. You know that. The problem the last twenty years is that many of the kids that get college degrees don't come back home to live and work. That is because the jobs don't match their skill sets and degrees.

 

It is not how smart you are for income and SE Ky has as many as anywhere else, in today's world it is how you are smart and how you use it to earn income.

Didn't watch the video, did you? If you had, you would have noted that in the first 20 seconds of the video, the narrator stated that Whitley County is 97% white and 88% of the residents over 25 don't have a college degree. Science Friction said zero about racism, and he was only making a very direct parallel to the education level of the demographic referenced in the OP.

If someone has no education past the education required by law that would be uneducated. Somewhere along in the division of social groups they were probably not college educated, but it got shortened.

As a Captain on a large metro fire department, I was making much more money than many persons with degrees. I had no college degree.

 

I see this as a major fallacy in today's society, we tell our kids the only way to succeed in life is with a college degree. This is simply not the truth.

I have a college degree and know many people who don't and can fix anything from cars, wiring a home, building a house, etc. You don't have to have a degree to be smart. Typical stereotype by you two.

Where did I say that the only way to succeed in life is to have a college degree? I am one of the strongest supporters of a technical education for kids in this state and have advocated for it personally in my various roles. My wife is a national director for career and technical centers and speaks weekly on it from the state of Washington to Alabama. I believe strongly in finding a skill set that require high specialization and the the earnings will follow.

 

These persons hold certifications and postsecondary degrees. Persons in these fields are highly successful. Although the average person with 4 year degrees right now make more than technical degrees. Those have Masters in general earn more than those with 4 year college degrees. This can't be based on one person, it is a total demographic. Let's understand that many in SE KY don't have any type of post secondary degree or certifications either. That is the issue in SE Ky, in general they don't have the high level skills needed to be an electrician, fire fighter, information technologist, etc.

 

Don't confuse what I have said with earning wages with success. Success is defined many ways. I will be the first in line to say college is not for everyone, but learning a high level, high demand skill is.

You must talk to different people than me in the area. Most of the people I hear talking about President Obama think he is a good person, but not a good President. I believe that a lot of people's perspective on him may change over the next few years. Now Hillary Clinton is another matter, most people around here seem to despise her.

That's actually a legit concern, considering that this area of Ky was a GOP stronghold long before NoKy.

A local county official told me that Bevin has already done more for the county than Bashear did in 8 years.
