January 13, 20179 yr Gotta do what wins. They tried the normal system and it didn't work. Don't completely agree here. The normal system you say they tried, was a pass first system to start the year. Yes no doubt UK is a running team first, and that is what the offense needs to focus on. UK deciding to become a running team first, was what turned it around. If they can add a consistent passing threat to the running game, then they can make more noise. It would have been very interesting to see how Barker would have done, if they didn't try to be a passing offense first under him. If they would have tried to be a running team first while he played, then I think he and the offense do even better.

I like Johnson but let's face it, unless his mid range passing improves dramatically he just doesn't give UK a real chance be successful in the passing game. Add to that he has issues holding on to the ball when he runs I think the job has to be wide open come spring.

He may have the worst ball security I have ever seen. The change to the running game is what salvaged the season not Johnson's play.

Johnson had 10 fumbles and 6 interceptions in 12 games. Of those 10 fumbles, 6 were lost. That gave him 12 turnovers in 12 games. Barker played in 2 1/4 had 5 interceptions and lost 2 fumbles. That's pretty much 3 turnovers a game....and yet Johnson is the one with the worst ball security that you've ever seen?

Barker's sample size is much smaller and there are multiple rumors that Drew's back was hurt as early as the second half of the Southern Miss game. Time will tell with him. As for Steven Johnson it seemed he dropped the ball every time he was brushed up against. He has to get much stronger to have a shot at the starting QB position next year. In my opinion he has the least upside of the three that will be competing next year. Lack of intermediate passing skills and the ability to hold on to the ball when hit will be his undoing in my opinion.

When Barker started UK was trying to be a passing team for some reason. You are a very smart fan, what is the best way to protect a QB, especially a young QB? That is to run the ball. Once Barker got hurt, UK changed their offense because they knew, Johnson was not a good passer, so they became more of a running team. Them switching to focusing on the run was more of the difference than Johnson being the QB. Plus switching to the running game helped them control the ball more, which also helped their defense play better. So it impossible to tell, because if Barker doesn't get hurt, maybe they don't ever switch to being a true running team. Which if they don't make that switch, then yes they don't do as well. However if they had made that switch to being a running team, even with Barker at QB, then yes I think its possible they do beat UL. It is impossible to know exactly how he would have done. I do think there needs to be a clear competition for the job. With that said Johnson has earned the right to where a guy will have to definitely out perform him in practice. If there is no clear difference in the QBs in practice, and another QB doesn't show they are better and they all look about equal. Then yeah Johnson deserves the right to be the man.
