Open Job: Ballard

Featured Replies

After just one year Copley has left Ballard to return to Tennessee. Who will Ballard go after in an effort to bring some stability to the program?

What is going on in Jefferson County? I've been told there is another 6A and a 4A school getting ready to open up as well.

VilleCoach, you seem to have the scoop. Can't confirm this anywhere. You have any inside info on how or really why it went down?

Coaching HS football and teaching a full load is tough to do and that is what most head coaches do in Kentucky. I was one of those guys for 23 years and it kicked my tail. Without a great wife and outstanding assistant coaches, we would have been awful and I would have been in big trouble. Being a head coach is much more manageable working 100 days, but the pay is not very good.

I think getting a taste last year of knowing that the majority of the time second in your district is your ceiling and the state quarterfinals game is your ceiling is likely another significant reason to move on to a place where you think you have a chance to advance farther may have been very enticing at 39 years old as well.

It's not just in that district. Fact is, the vast majority of programs know their 2017 ceiling/fate right now.

With the internal issues/concerns going on with JCPS as a whole it is tough to get a teacher to basically take a second job for free. From a sporting standpoint, I'd agree with @Purple88, if you're in a district with Trinity you know going into it the chances are very slim of getting passed them, even if the team you have is one of the best the school has had. Ballard could be a good job, but with the resurgence of Male the talent pool has just become that much thinner.

Copley head coaching stints

Pikeville - 1 year

Greenup - 2 years

Ballard - 1 year

That should have been a red flag right there when they hired him.

He was the DC at Pikeville for several years before becoming the HC there (4 or 5 years I think) and being railroaded by principal for a former legends son. I think he was a long time assistant at Lawrence and Centennial as well. He's 39, he's only been a handful of places total...not so much a red flag. TN high school football is just better overall from top to bottom. Better facilities, 150-200 kids in the program, LOADS of money, and little teaching responsibilities....I can't blame a guy at all for jumping at a job like that. Who does Ballard turn to now?

Anyone have an idea on who's the next guy in?
