Holmes does not have a kicker, hence no field goal. for a 4A school that can,t find a kid to even kick extra points. A couple of years ago Holmes had a soccer kid that was an excellent kicker.

Why the coaching edge to Connner?

 

I grew up with David in Florence, and although we haven't kept in touch personally, I have followed his career through our mutual friends. I think he is a solid guy, but I wouldn't yet put his coaching on the level of Coach Stellman. I'm not implying that Stellman is Vince Lombardi, but in a close game, I'd take him over David at this point. Just my opinion -- it wasn't necessarily a critique of David so much as a nod to Stellman's experience.

My bad, I thought you were talking staff. I know a few Holmes assistants, they are all top-notch, that's why I was curious.

That is called misdirection good offensive coordinators use that. Unfortunately against Holy Cross they misdirected themselves out of the game.

That kicker you're referring to would be Jeff Hughes. Could have probably gone pro to be honest, but he decided to go overseas and play soccer instead.

 

Not having a kicking game is something that has plagued Holmes for the past couple years. Field position will be huge in this game. IMO whichever team can win the field position aspect of the game, wins this one rather handily.

 

I like Holmes playmaking ability on special teams with Palmer back deep. As i predicted earlier, if Holmes can keep their composure and not shoot themselves in the foot, they win this game rather handily.

You have your opinion, I have mine. Last year Holmes team speed killed Conner and the same exact offense is back this year. If I'm not mistaken DJ had 200 rushing yards last year and 2 or 3 td's.

 

I know you cant compare last year to this year, but IMO Holmes is much improved this year having more experience so I'm gonna say they'll beat Conner by 2 or 3 TD's...IF they don't shoot themselves in the foot with mental mistakes.

 

Last year Holmes team speed did not beat Conner. Conner beat Conner in that game. Conner made way to many mistakes on both sides of the ball, and you can't do that with against a team that is that fast. Don't get me wrong, those boys can run with the best of them. But I think you'll see a much more discipline Conner team this year and it should stay close. Conner's one loss was to Highlands (who would/will beat everyone up here like that). Don't count out Conner in this one, trust me.

IMHO, this is among the hardest games in the state this weekend to predict accurately. I've gone back and forth and that is why I've waited until tonight to offer up my 2 cents.

Fundamentally sound, solid -- edge to Conner

Special teams -- edge to Conner

big play ability -- Holmes

home field -- Conner

composure -- Conner

speed -- Holmes

 

Two teams that are, in many ways, polar opposites; just tough to get a handle on.

 

I'll settle on Conner by 10+. I think the first half is close, Conner jumps up in the 2nd half, Holmes panics and tries "risky" plays resulting in digging a bigger hole. Something in the 24-14 area.

 

Very much agree. It won't be a high scoring affair. This will be the best defense that Holmes has faced to date.
