Oldercoach Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Not to discredit anybody's triple double last week, but how can a pass from player A to teammate B, who in turns passes it to player C who pauses...takes two dribbles and launches a successful 3 be recorded as an assist for player A? Seems that the assist (if one is even to be given) would be to player B that passed to the successful shooter. Anybody agree, or has this old guy lost total track of the game?

Isn't that a hockey assist what you are describing right there? I love this question though. My dad always told me that an assist is when Player A makes a pass to Player B and Player B scores without taking more than 2 dribbles to make the basket.
MJAlltheWay24 Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 The thing that I always thought should be counted as an assist, Player A passes to Player B who immediately takes a shot attempt and is fouled. If he makes either FT, then I think he should get an assist, but I believe that he does not unless the FG is made on the foul.

sweet16 Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I give an assist if the player hits a FT. I agree with that
BigVMan23 Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I give an assist if the player hits a FT. I agree with that Just, personally, "in your mind" you think of it that way, or you actually keep a book for someone and record it as such?

I record it as an assist. But on the other hand I am stingy on them for multiple dribbles. Pass has to lead to a score or 2 dribbles or less like stated up above.
HammerTime Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 IMO anything after two dribbles doesn't count.
BigVMan23 Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I record it as an assist. But on the other hand I am stingy on them for multiple dribbles. Pass has to lead to a score or 2 dribbles or less like stated up above. But by "rule" it's not an assist if the pass doesn't lead to a field goal either. It's one thing if someone is keeping book and using it to track team statistics "internally" and everyone is playing by the same standard, that's totally cool and might be what you are doing here. I guess I asked the question because if someone is keeping a book and turning "official" stats in to the KHSAA and not using accepted "stat" practices...then that really raises a question mark on stats if everyone isn't singing out of the same choir book. And hey, I'm in agreement with you, if a guy is fouled on a shot that would have been an assist had he made the basket, and scores on a free throw, the player should get an assist. But it's not currently scored that way not, at least not officially.
Rick Rude Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Should never be counted as an assist if the basket is not made....jmo

Oldercoach Posted December 10, 2016 Author Posted December 10, 2016 Saw in the Herald this morning, Fox said the assist in question was a no-doubter to him. He said it was clearly not an assist in his opinion. Sure like the young man's calling it like he saw it.

What is sad is the score keeper had it wrong which led them to taking him out after the scoreboard said he had 10, there was plenty of time left for him to have gotten another assist if the scoreboard had been correct. Either way good job on Fox's part.
