Holy cow! What is an assist?

Featured Replies

I'm blown away that assists are being given on free throws.

What does an assist lead to?

Assist at any level are a "broken" stat because of the way the game has evolved.

If Lebron James drives the lane and throws a no-look pass right to Kevin Love in the corner and Love catches it and pump fakes defender flying at him and gets fouled and is awarded 3 foul shots why shouldn't Lebron get an assist?

Likewise if Lebron grabs a rebound and throws the ball the length of the floor to Kyrie who catches it and hands it off to J. R. Smith coming down the lane for an uncontested dunk why should Kyrie get an assist and not Lebron? Lebron did the most work that led to the basket.

Because the rules of stat keeping says he doesn't.

A well functioning team will have many passes that create the open shot. Let's give everyone an assist and a trophy. You can buy the juice boxes for half time next week.

Strange how coaches must attend workshops or take online classes, to learn about coaching but scorekeepers aren't even given a worksheet on what is and isn't (name a thousands things).

And that gets me on the KHSAA scoreboard web site. Why are so many teams missing complete stats and even complete rosters? I see teams with team stats listed but not players stats but how can you have team stats, if you don't have players stats? I thought the KHSAA was putting their foot down on the practice of not posting stats a couple of years ago. What happened!

That is why it is a broken stat. Why does the last player get an assist if he/she did nothing that others did not do? In olden days when teams passed the ball around the perimeter for a set shot maybe it had some merit. It really does not now. Maybe it should just be done away with?

And regarding an assist not being awarded for a pass that leads to the receiving shooter being fouled.............So if my pass is so good to my teammate that the only possible way to not allow a basket is for the defender to foul my teammate, I don't get an assist for that.................but if I make a slightly worse pass to my teammate and he makes a shot falling backward because of my bad pass....I get an assist for that.

What if you make a great pass and the shooter misses an easy bucket? What the heck, you get an assist and a trophy!

I am a little biased as to the value of the assist. My kids ability to pass the basketball paid for his college education.

I do agree that the assist might be the most subjective of all basketball metrics. A made field goal is a made field goal worth 2-3 points. A rebound is a rebound just offensive or defensive. There are no hard fast definitions of an assist and the awarding of the assist from official scorer to official scorer can leave you scratching your head at times.

There is no 2 dribble rule or the post player can't make more than one post move. The assist is just the last pass that leads directly to a basket.

There does seem to be some bias that the assist is overrated and and the making of that last pass or routine pass shouldn't be enough to warrant a stat bump. At the same time a layup is worth 2 points whether it is uncontested or Sportscenter worthy. You get credit for a rebound whether you boxed out of if the rebound just fell into your lap.

Not every player has the ability to make that last pass on time and on target to shooter or a cutter. Not every player has the court vision to see the entire court and anticipation to make offense easier.

Dean Smith was a huge advocate of opening up the assist definition to include a pass that led to player getting fouled and converting from the free throw line. As big of a fan as I am of Carolina Basketball and PG's even I can't make that jump.

Just my opinion but I raised guards!

You had me until you had to mention that dreaded Tar heels coach. lol

At Bellarmine it's when a pass is made and the receiving player scores without any dribble and Coach D WILL NOT count anything but that exactly.

Well that sure takes all the subjectivity out of it.
