What happened with Mayfield. Go without making the finals to, starting 17 years later, going to half of them? A little history lesson please.

 

Also which program has benefited from class expansion more? Seems like a few, mainly Belfry and Bowling Green. Or was this going to happen regardless of expansion?

 

BG and Belfry would have been there no matter the class.

Bowling Green and Highlands would have had some classic battles in the last few years in the old 3A. Johnson Central would likely have played BG this year in the old 3A setup.

 

Louisville Central probably benefited as much as anybody under the new 6 class system. Belfry and Mayfield would have met in the finals a few times recently in the old 2A setup.

Well Mayfield might have still been 1A though

NewCath, and this is awful b/c I've seen all of them (the 86 and 01 games tie for the worst, IMO.)

True, but it doesn't make it any easier to watch your team lose in the Finals. Add to this the fact that if it weren't for Beechwood, we had a good shot at titles in '92, '93 and, IMO, '95 where I think we would have been a good matchup for Mayfield w/ our team speed that year.

Here is a list o the schools with 3+ runner up trophies, there are 26 schools with 2 and 46 with 1 not included in the list.

 

Interesting note, all but 1 team to have 5 or more runner up trophies have won multiple titles.

I believe Beechwood has been in the finals 17 of the last 32 years. That's better than 50% but that is the last 32, not the last 40.

Don't disagree at all. They lost in maybe '86 when they went for 2 and the pass was complete I think but Frank Jacobs foot was on the back line. They surely would have won the year Holy Cross upset them in the regional finals. I always tell kids it is better to have lost in the finals than never to have played in the game at all.

If you include 1976 to2016 it is 41 years. Still more than half. I think Trinity has made around 25 in that span.

According to the KHSAA, Belfry has 13, Beechwood has 16, and NCC has 14 state title games since 1976. Those are also total appearances for NCC and Belfry, while Beechwood was also runner-up in 1974.

I had my grandson's bachelor party last night so Im a bit fuzzy but on quick glance I found four teams that have lost the finals three times to the same team. Mayfield beat NCC 3 times, Danville beat Mayfield 3 times, Highlands beat Owensboro 3 times and Trinity beat St. X 3 times.

Central beat Belfry 4 times.
