CovCath isn't a state power. They were a decent team hoping to pull off a championship appearance for the first time in ten years. They beat Highlands and had a nice playoff run, so they made strides compared to the last few seasons. Lots of youth on this team, so expectations should be high for this team next season.

I don't get the put down on Cov Cath, 9-4 is a good year for most anyone, especially a young team. They were down 7 points with 30 seconds left on the 7 yard line. Luckliy our defense held and FC won, but they were very close to tying the game or even going for 2 and the win. We knew going into the game this was going to be a hard fought game, and it lived up to it. It was a battle of 2 district champs slugging it out. When I posted last night that our players were mad about the poll here it wasn't that many picked us to lose, just that it was so lopsided towards Cov Cath on what on paper beforehand and in reality was a close game.

Good. I'll say it again, GOOD season for Cov Cath. Very good, young talent, but in the end, when you can't hold onto the ball, sustain drives and tackle consistently, you lose to good teams.

I think there's lots of reasons to be optimistic for next season, but this season should still be going.

It cracks me up with the negative stuff that has to come out by most likely Bird fans. Let's state the facts. Bowling Green is the best in 5A. Covcath had a good year and lost to a good Fern Creek team. They are probably the next best two teams in 5A. Covcath made too many mistakes and it cost them. I didn't think that Covcath played well and Fern Creek made them pay for it, which is what a good team does. If you don't play your best this time of year, you go home. The jabs at Covcath is most likely Birds fans that are bitter this year was down for them and that they had the same record as Grant Co at the bottom of the district. Good thing there is always next year for both teams to build on what was good this year and correctable for next year. Great win by a well coached team at Fern Creek. I'll just say this: CCH won District for the 1st time in a decade which is a HUGE stride for their program, with many of their top guys as underclassmen. Whether Highlands was dreadful or not...that's their problem...CCH still broke that streak in brutal fashion.

 

They also beat teams like Sycamore who proved to be a D1 power in Ohio, among others. These Seniors have spearheaded the future of this program, and deserve a lot of credit.

CovCath falls to Fern Creek, 35-28

 

A goal-line stand in the final moments of the fourth quarter allowed Fern Creek to come away with the 35-28 win over Covington Catholic on Friday night, earning the Tigers a spot in the Class 5-A semifinals next week.

 

Fern Creek (11-2) had a 21-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Colonels (9-4) responded with back-to-back touchdowns and got the ball with 2:32 left in the game. The contest came down to its final seconds when Fern Creek held Covington Catholic on fourth-and-goal with 6.5 seconds left to perserve the win.

 

The Tigers will face undefeated Bowling Green in the semifinals in a 7:30 p.m. game at home on Friday.

 

Fern Creek head coach Joshua Abell said that his team plays better when they are not favorited and the predictions for game may have influenced the team’s drive to compete.

 

From the kids’ perspective, I don’t think they had any doubt that they were gonna win that game,” Abell said. “They came out hungry.”

 

Colonel head coach Eddie Eviston said he was so proud of his team’s efforts on the field and the continual drive they have shown throughout the season. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to get the win.

 

“We just had too many ups and downs,” Eviston said. “We didn’t play consistent enough and you can’t do that in a regional final game and expect to win. We fought, but we just can’t play that inconsistent.”

I think you are forgetting or don't know that this is Coach Eviston second year at the helm. I don't follow Cov Cath and know very little about the team but I know this guy was a winner! Don't believe me google him or ask any body who played Georgetown College in the early 2000's. Great players don't always make great coaches but judging by a 9-4 record and a strong showing in the playoffs in just his second year, is reason for all Cov Cath fans and alumni to be happy.

A great season. Only one teams gets to the top every year and while you try every year things usually have to align just right or happen to have a bunch of talent all at the same time.

Just the second time since 1990 that neither Highlands nor CovCath won a region title. 2005 was the other year.

It's funny. Every time a team does bad, haters zoom into the small picture to criticize them. "You should be good already." But when a team does good, they zoom out and suddenly look at the big picture, "Why didn't you win state?" "Why didn't you take it all the way?"

For the Cov Cath fans I think you are right, the team was better probably by a couple td's than last year and the program is headed in a great direction.

For the haters, they have a point, CCH lost in the regional finals in 15 and they lost in the regional finals in 16, just like they have done many years now in a row they just lost to Fern Creek instead of Highlands.
