For those of you who have seen Mercer....

Featured Replies

Mercer should easily win district and if they beat Boyle County, they will probably be number 1 in 2A. You have to see Mercer play to understand the excitement coming from Titletown's neighbor. Extremely exciting. I read earlier where someone said people who hadn't been to a game in 10 years were showing up at the game not knowing what a 1st down is. I also know a few people who refuse to come to games after going for 20+ years as well. I can almost guarantee that when Mercer plays, regardless of where they are at, there will be a large following. The excitment, hype, and the overall feeling of a community coming together for a common cause are invigorating and I hope nothing but success for Mercer County Mighty Titans. Yes, Mercer moves up to 5A next year to play with the big boys, but there is a lot of talent that comes from the Mercer area that won't be split between two schools any longer. Not to mention that Marty Jaggers has the coaching pedigree. The new quote some Mercer County fans have adopted is "The dynasty begins...." I'm glad I'll be here to watch it.

Mercer won't be number 1 in 2a if they win against Boyle. Russell will be king of the Ranks until we lose. So they better hope that Ashland beats us.

Ratings are nice but I'll trade a #1 rating during the season for a championship at the end of the season any day...If I'm not mistaken, I don't think Russell was ever rated #1 last year until after the championship...Mercer can have #1 during the season...

I'm not worried about the #1 ranking if they get it. That's no biggy. But, if they do I think their goal will be to keep it til next year.

If Mercer keeps scoring in the 50's and posting shutouts which just might happen, then they might leapfrog Russell. But, that might be a good thing for Russell to put a fire in their belly to get it back at the end of the season.

Can they run the table from LCA to Louisville? After saturday night I think they have a good chance. I mean this team has alot of jelling to do still. But, they looked unreal! Before you start slamming my opinion I think you need to see them play. I know it sounds crazy but this team is SICK!

I think you and a lot of the other Mercer fans are setting this team up for a big disappointment when they don't advance to Louisville this year. To run the table, they will still have to beat Belfry or Russell or both.

Their has been a ton of talent in this area for several years. But, like you said it's been split up between two schools. Your best talent has been at Harrodsburg where they have had numerous Division 1 players in recent history. In 1998 their entire front four went D1. With 3 going to UK and another Ohio st. They've had 3 NFL draft picks in the last 15 years. With one entering his 11th season with the chiefs being considered the best blocking Tight End in the league by John Madden. And who can forget craig yeast? From right here. When it comes to post high school success our neighbors Danville and Boyle Co come nowhere close to comparing. But, the talent has always been here. Now you take talent from both schools and you have yourself a serious team whether it's 2A of 5A they will compete. You can see it from the initial kickoff. They come at you at amazing speed. I really think they beat South Laurel with just the opening kickoff. They were on the ball when it was recieved at the 15 yard line. But, these guys know nothing will be handed to them. I remember when Lexington Catholic came to Mercer as a 2A team before they went to 3A and they brought a 100 kids. They kicked our butts but they didn't win the state title. The best team will win in the end.

Without the 6 class system Mercer would only become a small 3A school next season much like Boyle County did after winning 2A. I sincerely believe Mercer will be very competitve in the new class. Next season may be a little down but this years soph class is VERY strong and the coaches believe that team may be special! Much of Mercer's success so far this season is "confidence" they genuinely believe they are good. the defense especially wants to prove themselves. As we all know confidence plays a big part in a teams success. This will benefit the Titans in the years to come, like it did Boyle County when they moved up. I too believe Mercer may be hurt by not playing a difficult regular season schedule because the playoffs will be a whole different game.

Well with the schedule. I'm pretty sure it probably was set before the merger besides Boyle co. Not many 2A schools have a monsterous schedule considering the bottom half of the teams are not that good. Who knows? Boyle might not be as bad as people think. If they beat the best team that Danville has had in 5 years tomorrow night then that will be one heck of a test for Mercer. Boyle started 7 sophomores on that team last week. They are a quality opponent. I am just looking forward to the next game.

How do you figure small??? They jump to 5A not 4A...The small 3A schools will be in 4A next year with a few still in 3A...

It really doesn't matter...Enjoy your "free" season playing DOWN in 2A...This will be your best chance to get a ring...Highlands and company await you starting next year...

Mercer sure has alot of haters. But, I can understand why. How do you get free? Is your team going to lay down and give it to us? I don't expect that. If they went by the same guidelines as they do this year and in the past as he described then you would have known that with the merger Mercer has just over 900 students in the senior high. Wow that just sounds like a huge 5A school doesn't it? Starting next season they will go by the number of male students. With the merge they will have enough to push them into 5A. But with just over 900 kids they are the size of Boyle co which is a small 3A school this year. Trust me Mercer will have the talent to compete with the big boys. I think Highlands knows what kind of talent that is in this area.

Tons of hype for a merged school that has not made it past the second round in 5-6 years. Beating week teams by 50 doesn't win a state championship. This community better not put all their eggs in one basket. I'll have to come to the Boyle game to see for my self.

If you want to be fair about it, lets look at the actual numbers. 2 Year Enrollment Averages (what alignments are based upon)

The average 2 year enrollments for Harrodsburg (233.5) and Mercer Co (704) combined is 937.5.

That would rank them about midway (31st) in the current 3A class we have now, one spot below Covington Catholic (945).

They are bigger than 3A schools, Rockcastle (904), Boyle (862.5), Lexington Catholic (862), Bell Co (854), Highlands (810), Paducah Tilghman (776.5), all of which would be the odds on favorite if they played a year in 2A.

And when compared to some of the 2A big dogs, their numbers are decidedly greater. Belfry (680), Breathitt (672), Russell (666), Sheldon Clark (642), Fort Campbell (581.5), Newport (566), Owensboro Catholic (509).

That is not to say that Mercer did anything wrong. The chips just fell that way and that is the way it is. But to suggest that they don't have a competitive edge, or that they are just barely out of 2A enrollment range is not realistic, IMO.

Well, that sums it up. Pretty thorough. Can't argue with that. I guess you all are just stuck with us this year.
