South Warren should be able to come to 5A and become an instant contender beginning next year. I'd be surprised if they aren't able to consistently compete with BG when they come to 5A in 2017.

I'll also be surprised if Highlands isn't capable of competing against BG in the next year or so.

Other than the schools we have mentioned I don't think there is anything they can do. All the schools mentioned have strong feeder systems, a plethora of talent, good coaching and great support from their administrations and community. Nailing all of those components is just too hard for many schools to accomplish. It's hard enough for the schools mentioned to maintain all of those components let alone others getting to that level.

Anything can happen on a Friday night but to be fairly blunt and frank, the Purples will be a machine for 3 more seasons after this season. I think right now Purples are 73-3. Good chance they get to 125 wins before they lose 5 more. Again, just prediction on my part but if not 125 wins (52 more Wins out of next 57 games) it will be pretty dern close. Crazy to think about but it could happen

Owensboro has the talent to do it year in and year out. It's a matter of a few bad breaks from injuries to a few key kids either not participating or being injured. I think BG has a staff that can make in game adjustments with the best of em. OHS' staff is great with game planning but I feel in game adjustments have been their Achilles heel.

 

Maybe I'm just a delusional homer, but I feel if a few things are approached differently, OHS can get to the level of BG.

Concerning Teams that can challenge BG in Class 5A:

1. Highlands - Have the tradition and the mental toughness to get it done. Have good young talent and should be back to threaten for State Championships soon (heck should be in Semi-Final Again this year).

2. South Warren - Basically just erase Warren Central off the jersey and put South Warren on the jersey as most of those players are now Spartans. Have avoided BG for good reason (except last season), but once they are in same district will fight BG for all they have and will have some success.

3. Owensboro - Have the talent, but not the system. On the lower levels (Jr High mostly), have beaten BG recently, but that hasn't and doesn't translate onto the big field. Pieces are here, but you can't be 1 dimensional and beat BG.

4. Covington Catholic - have strong teams that have beaten BG before, but must first overcome their local long-time hurdle of the Highland Bluebirds before you can think of BG. Because you will never get to BG if you can't beat Highlands. Most want to see that to believe it.

4. Greenwood - BIG move this season when they upset South Warren. But have NEVER defeated BG in about 23-25 times. If they do not beat them before JR QB Jackson Adams graduates, I feel this streak continues because it's as much mental now as anything.

5. Pulaski County - Riley Hall was a generational talent and deserved to be remembered for a long time, but can the Maroons rise to the occasion without him. Well coached, good young talent, but no Riley Halls walkin though that door.

 

I also considered Christian County, Graves County, John Hardin, Franklin Simpson, Pulaski Southwestern and Warren Central (out of respect), but didn't feel those clubs had a good chance to beat them consistently or are currently not in 5A.

 

What can/might derail BG:

1. Coach Wallace can't coach forever unfortunately. Who will replace him? Can't "replace" him, but what will the new regime look like and when will that happen? Would one of the current assistant coaches want it? Would think Coach Wallace would orchestrate this though.

2. Rumor winds suggest there could be a new Catholic High School in BG. If that is true and whenever that might be ("likely" a decade away), it would surely effect the enrollment some at BGHS and likely dictate BG to drop classes. All speculation at this point mind you.

 

But as Purple Nation always likes to get out on the edge of the wave, BG will be very good for at least the next 3 seasons. As good as this season, I wouldn't say that, but that also remains to be seen.

 

I hope Purple Pride still has some of his Purple Kool-Aid left because I have a strong feeling we'll need some in December.

Owensboro has the most similar situation to BG and could make a few tweaks to make a move. Cov Cath has the head coach in place and is making a steady upward movement as we speak. Highlands just needs another good run of classes to come along and to remember how to play defense.

What do the other schools have to do? Go get some players.
