Disappointing loss for the Panthers. Make no mistake, I am a Panther fan all the way, but are there others out there that hate this offense?? I realize we really missed John Michael, but the offense and the play calling mystifies me more every week. Why do you run up the middle on 3rd and fifteen when backed up, then with 3rd and short, drop back 10 yards for a pass?? Talented skill players rarely get the ball. I remember reading a post last year from and Oldham County fan that said we would grow to hate this offense. Funny, I didn't believe him at the time!

 

To the Pikeville faithful. The offense does seem goofy to some, but it is a nightmare to others. Oldham County, if you remember beat Cov. Cath with that offense and almost beat Highlands with it. It is a nightmare for defensive coordinators. All people tend to scrutinize all new offenses. It works and it will work for Pikeville, just let Coach J coach, you guys will be fine.

That's okay...CovCath, LexCath, and Highlands all hated it too. (But for a different reason!)

With all due respect, I don't think that the folks at Pikeville are not going to sit and be blindly optimistic based on what what happened at Oldham County. Different kids, different circumstances, etc. It certainly sounds as if they are much more concerned with the here and now.

 

I don't want to sound too much like a jerk. I think ANY program deserves patience at this point in the year.

Style of offense is overrated. A good offense is one that scores points. I'm sure the Pikeville faithful will love the offense if it starts generating points on Friday nights.

The fact remains: Many knowledgable people think there are some players just being wasted in this offense. Surely they're not all wrong. .

Many "knowledgable people" thought the wishbone "wasted players." Many more thought the I formation "wasted players." etc., etc.

 

The fact that those worked despite opposition to them doesn't mean the offense really "wasted players," nor does it mean those opposing it weren't "knowledgable." They just didn't have the total picture as to what you get out of it, why it's run, etc.

 

As to players being "wasted," if a fan would like to see the ball thrown more because that's more exciting, that's understandable. But if their team doesn't have a "natural passing qb" but does have a stockpile of good running backs and strong offensive linemen, wouldn't forcing your team to work on throwing more be "wasting" those good backs and linemen? And wouldn't forcing those plays to be run in games be futile and a "waste" of time when you could be "honing" what your team's strengths tend toward?

 

As a coach, you 1) evaluate what you've got as strengths and try to run an attack that MAXIMIZES those; 2) you evaluate what would be weaknesses and try to LIMIT those. Finally, 3) you work on it to the point where it hopefully gets EXECUTED the way it's designed. We're pretty sure we're right on about 1 and 2...3 still needs quite a bit of work; but it's VERY early in what is a LONG season. And, these are YOUNG KIDS; we're going to be PATIENT with them (would hope the "fans" do the same, but can completely understand that they won't be).

 

In fact, I haven't heard a positive comment from anyone this year and maybe last season as well about this offense.

 

This year, we've played two pretty high-quality 3A and 4A defenses (EJ had only ONE TD scored on them in their scrimmages and 1st game) and still churned out good, long-drives -- but you're right, people SHOULDN'T be positive since it takes converting drives to POINTS to win games.

 

And, we only ran "this offense" ONE SERIES last year (vs. Somerset).

 

LSU -- Thanks...ditto back to you. And I know I probably shouldn't be on here responding to fans' concerns...but I always had a lot of respect for the college coaches that had to have a "coaches call-in show" and the professionalism with which they (usually) handled criticism. I heard one of them say one time to the host after an especially brutal caller called in to berate the coach that if they were that upset about a bad performance, it just showed how much they loved the team. That's what we have here. I would NEVER expect hugs and kisses from the football-knowledgeable fans of PIKEVILLE after going 0-2...even when it IS to two teams of the quality we played. AND, I don't want the kids of ours that do read this to see some of the POSITIVE (things based on stats and film-analysis) along with the almost total-negative comments.

Pikeville will be fine once they get to their district. May not be a great year but a average year for Pikeville is better than most teams can manage in class A in the mountains. East and Henry Clay are pretty darn good. I don't think East Kentucky University would do very well again West Virginia, it's just a different world no matter what type of offense you run. The main things is get your kids to believe in your system and play in games you can win. Pikeville killed Corbin last year in the same bowl game. Has coach J forgot how to coach since then? Absolutely Not.

The bad thing that I have heard about this offense is it's predictability. According to my sources there is only a few plays where the fullback/guard doesn't take you to the ball. But I haven't seen it in person, that is from a coach that has played them.

I agree. We've got to do a better job getting the ball to some of those kids.

It may be true that they don't get the ball. If they are your best players you should put them in key positions to make plays.

I am trying to be impartial here, but I think the question has to be asked since this discussion is going on so freely.

I'd say you can pretty much count on, by week 5, that we'll be running the "lonesome polecat" formation 90% of the time along with the "Notre Dame Box" 10%.

you!If the fans are already on the coaches at "The other Ville"what kind of

second guessing is going on with the players?No system will work if it doesn't

Any chance we might see that sooner, say...next week. We've had some success with the polecat but it seemed to stir some contraversy in some quarters.

 

As you certainly seem to know, your kids will be fine. When you lose a key offensive player that early in the season it takes some time for everyone to get comfortable in the scheme. I'm certain that will happen. I just hope it doesn't happen next week. Good luck after that.
