Don't think they will hire an AAU coach, might be wrong, completely different beast coaching high school basketball, fundraising, budget, parents, supervisors, middle school program, elementary program

 

I would be more than shocked if they hired an AAU coach. Unfortunately, Coach Cook didn't leave behind a strong assistant. That would've been helpful!

 

Chris Huff should receive a high level of consideration.

If he works there it'd be in a classified position, not a certified one. While it would be a bonus to keep Treyvon , it'd be bad judgment to hire a coach in hopes of keeping a player. Even if it worked out that way, the player would be there for 2 years. The coach could end up being much more permanent.

 

You shouldn't settle on a coaching hire due to considerations over one player.

HA!! If that were only the case. Unfortunately, most schools are making their hires now based on what kid or couple kids can they get in via transfer from AAU connections. That's probably why the state of KY is lacking major talent...because transfers, AAU and the constant merry go round of players and coaches leave little room for skill and program development and it shows.

Treyvon is not going anywhere, he will play at Mercer and be a D1 player period. Whomever they hire they better make the decision quickly. I would think that hiring and intern basis for a year would be best scenario. Then you have more time in the spring to make best decision. I like the idea of hiring an interim coach and then opening it up for real after the season. At the same time if there are some top notch coaches interested in the job and applying right now then they may as well go ahead and hire a full time coach now. A coach applying for the job in August may not be available in April.

really no need to interm tag on because all these coaching jobs are 1 year deals anyway. So if the coach struggles or does not do a good job he can be replaced after 1 year. The interm tag I would think would scare some coaches off. With the right coach who is willing to stay longer than 2 years and try and build it the correct way this could be a sleeping giant!

Hope this isn't true. Mercer will be looking for a new coach in two years (after Treyvon leaves). Maze would have shown that he's always looking for the next best coaching job, and Turley, while a good coach, has hopped from job to job. 11 stops in 34 years.

AAU coaches come in all sizes and flavors, just like those that have coached High School ball. There is plenty of good and bad to go around of each. Not sure if there is specific behavior that someone would want to be avoided when identifying somebody as an AAU coach, or just the image that some have of an AAU coach.

 

Regardless, I would want the best developer of talent that is committed to the kids who gives the school the best chance to win a regional championship doing things the right way while representing the school with class. The potential of who that may be should not be limited to non-AAU coaches. In fact some coaches labeled an AAU coach may never have coached an AAU game yet that is their label. For example, coaching on the NIKE EYBL circuit is nowhere near what most would perceive as an AAU coach. When you lace it up against the likes of UK's incoming freshmen class during your EYBL season, you had better be able to coach or you will get blown off the court even with the best players of the Commonwealth in your huddle. I mention that as an example only because many have the perception that AAU coaches are not good coaches, they just recruit players well.

There are good and bad on both sides, just like there are exceptions to every rule. However, anyone that watches AAU basketball knows it's nothing like high school. That goes for EYBL, UA, Adidas and most everything else out there. It's a whole different ballgame, literally.

 

I'm sure there are some AAU coaches that would do well in high school but, at least in my opinion, they'd be the exception not the norm.
