No, they have only been crowning state champions for around 50 years or less. The Birds have one in almost half of those seasons.

 

Looking back over the last decade or so last year was most asuradly a "down" year for Highlands Football...good luck this year.

 

The last "decade", even two "decades" were not the norm by any stretch. How many Division 1 quarterbacks did they have playing over the course of those years?

 

If a "down" year means a semi-final appearance where they take a prohibitive favorite in many people's eyes to the wire then that is certainly acceptable to me.

Yes they lost by 1 point to a team that but a running clock on the birds. Man I respect the program but last was a down year for sure. There are a lot of schools that would have went deep into the playoffs beating Dixie or Cov Catholic. I don't see the Birds getting past PC or BG this year and with all due respect to those programs it will be another down year.

If the Oline does not get a ton better it will be a long year for the Birds. Brady Gosney ran for his life all night. This could be the smallest team HHS has had in a long time.

I agree, the O and D Lines worry me. I've seen HHS win with small players but they were always built like very mean fireplugs haha. Everyone seems, albeit from a distance, to be thin. Skinny arms, skinny legs... No bulk or at least very few with it. I know speed kills but you have to be able to give your speed time to kill IMO.

I have seen Highlands win state with the same style team. But take your shots . JOAT these posters been waiting there whole lifes to bash the birds. Definitely agree that most NKY schools would do the exact same thing HHS did tonight against a school like St. X. However, and this is an honest question, what, if any, positives did you take away from tonight? Not trying to start a fight, just seeing if you saw something that I missed. I left after the 1st series of the second half but I saw a realistically down St. X squad do whatever they wanted when they wanted.

Most people who watch football know this is going to be a down year. Highlands Trinity Mayfield NCC BG are all state title game or it is a down year.

Wow you don't score a point against a team that lost 5 games last year. Cooper will be down from last year but I expect a barn burner. I will say the birds will have a running clock against Ryle and SK.

A ray of hope is that historically the oline shows drastic improvement as the season progresses.

There were some highlights and lowlights. Clearly the Birds have to shore up their lines on both sides of the ball.

 

I thought Greene had a very nice kickoff return. Venemman impressed me as well, he has some wheels. Pulsfort and Murray can get to the boundary with their speed and should be fine vs NKY competition. Lets remember St X has excellent speed and strength in just about every position. Even when the Birds made great plays like a catch or run there was always a defender right there. Nobody got hurt which imo is most important.

 

#7 for St X Micah ? according to my stepson who attends St X is a Skywalker. Incredible hops in the secondary for the Bombers. Kid doesnt even play hoops but throws down windmill dunks in the gym over the summer. The QB was good but not sure I saw Major D-1. I thought their backup QB #2 Chase Wolfe was just as good. To put it in perspective, St X only dressed a handful of JV kids for the scrimmage. They had 3 different teams out there who were Jr's and Sr's.

I dunno how people define a 'down year', but calpreps ranked Highlands 28th overall in state next year. The team was rated 19.4 points lower than their average (2003-2014).

 

This year in calpreps pre-season predictions Highlands is ranked 43rd overall, with a score that is 24.2 points lower than their average (2003-2015).

I remember 3 years in a row of scrimmages against Trinity ending in scores like this. In December, the Birds went 2 for 3 on state titles. Don't read too much into this.

The mighty birds took their lumps against some NKY schools last year. It's a good thing Cooper moved up last year because they would have gone home a week earlier. It was a down year when you get it handed to you by teams you dominated in the past. Again Cooper is still a 5a school by the numbers.

 

Well, then whoever made the decision for Cooper to go to 6A has to be regretting it -- if he or she has ever fessed up. I think if HHS were given 100 chances to make the decision to play in this 5A division or go to 4A - where "the numbers" would put them -- I think they make the 5A decision 100 times. If that means that you get beat sometimes by teams that have historically been mediocre or worse, then you work harder and move on.
