Florida woman fatally shot by cop in citizen academy accident - NY Daily News

A woman is dead after she was accidentally shot by a Florida police officer in a citizen training academy roleplay scenario gone wrong.

Mary Knowlton was one of two participants randomly selected from a group of 35 for a shoot-don’t shoot simulation during a two-hour training Tuesday at the Punta Gorda Police Department, Chief Tom Lewis told reporters at a press conference.

“During the first scenario, in a horrible accident participant Mary Knowlton was mistakenly struck by a live round,” Lewis said.

She was transported to the local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“I am asking that if you pray, you pray for Mary’s husband and family and the officers and witnesses involved in this incident,” Lewis continued. “Everyone involved is in a state of overwhelming shock and grief.”

Florida Department of Law Enforcement is already on scene investigating.

“The Punta Gorda Police Department realizes that our community will have many questions about this incident. However, we are taking care not to jeopardize the investigation,” Lewis said.

He declined to answer any questions from reporters on scene and did not address why there were live rounds in the weapon.

The officer, who has not been named, is on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Punta Gorda is a city of 17,000 located on the Gulf Coast, located just over 20 miles northwest of Fort Myers.

At first glance, I feel absolutely horrible for both the victim and the officer that shot her. He had to have assumed it was a blank.

Someone needs to pay and pay dearly for this. Heads need to roll.

This one was in the news today. They charged the CCW instructor and his assistant/daughter. They were teaching a gun malfunction scenario.

CCW instructor, assistant indicted in gun shop owner's shooting - Cincinnati News, FOX19-WXIX TV

A Clermont County grand jury indicted a concealed carry weapons instructor and his assistant in the June shooting death of a gun shop owner during a concealed carry class, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

James Baker, the owner of the Kay Jay Gun Shop on Lindale-Mt. Holly Road, was shot and killed June 18 when instructor Mark T. Montgomery discharged a handgun while practicing a weapon malfunction drill, according to the prosecutor's office.

Montgomery faces one felony count of reckless homicide.

His daughter, Katie Dunham, who was assisting with the class, also was indicted on one misdemeanor count of negligent homicide, prosecutors said.

Eighteen witnesses testified on Tuesday before the grand jury, including all 10 participants in the class.

Other witnesses included investigators from the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office.

Montgomery and Dunham were not physically arrested, court officials said Wednesday.

They were summoned to make their first appearances in Clermont County Common Pleas Court on Aug. 17.

Awful. That's why you have to have 2 people checking every single person for live ammo before scenarios.

I am with you. I have no idea how this can happen.

As one of my former ranger instructors used to say, "There is NO such thing as an Accidental Discharge."

I know nothing about guns. But how difficult is it to check is loaded or not? And---can a glance be misleading, where is can look empty but it's not?

Either incompetent or lazy officer running the scenario.

Just a guess, but probably dropped his mag and forgot to clear the chambered round.

Which is why you rack it, check the chamber AND barrel...release the slide...rack it AGAIN...check chamber and barrel AGAIN...and I know I'm preaching to the choir here when I say this. This is an "accident" that it 100% without question avoidable and should never, ever happen.
