Baton Rouge Police Shooting

BRPD spent $70k on gear last month anticipating the determination made by the US Attorney's office.

Were those purchases directly tied to this? I'm asking because a lot of departments buy equipment in the back half of the year when they see what funds are available in their budgets.

$70K isn't really a whole lot to spend for a department the size of that one. Just updating their vest could cost that much (FYI bullet proof vest have expiration dates, I didn't know that until a few years ago...and must routinely be replaced.)

If it was all riot gear, then you may be right, or it could be that they are just now buying the equipment that was needed that they didn't have during previous protest.

Riot gear

It's easy to MMQB split second decisions when you have months to pick apart every little detail in the video.

Agreed. However, it has value.

Riot gear

May have realized after the summer that they needed new or more equipment. It takes weeks to get most equipment in, this may have been ordered after the summer...not in anticipation.

Many departments aren't actually equipped Riot Gear per se'...event of this summer may have made them realize how I'll equipped they were and orders were placed then.

In the grand scheme of things, you still have to look at things from the perspective of those that were there making the possibly life or death decisions, with seconds to decide.

I think a lot of departments are buying these items now just given the way the country is going down the toilet with people "protesting" everything, whether they're right, wrong, or indifferent.

Absolutely disheartening...

Was it ever determined if he actually had a gun?

Even if he did, I can't see that many shots being necessary.

Yes it was in his pocket, in the same area that they said he was reaching according to what was just said on NBC evening news.

Why disheartening?

Again, LEO are taught to fire until the threat is stopped.

I hate that anyone, ever, has to be shot. Sometimes it is necessary, however.

The officer who shot Alton Sterling has been fired from his job. Blane Salimoni.

Another officer, Howie Lake II will be suspended for 3 days.
