The amount of people claiming the NBA is astonishing. It's funny to me how people talk about how awful the refereeing is and has been but yet want to believe the NBA is rigged.

"The NBA is rigged for money"

Who is making this money and how do they get it? The NBA has already collected the check from ESPN/ABC for the rights to broadcast all of the Finals games. They don't get paid on a game to game basis so that theory is shot. The people making money? The Cavs and Warriors And the cities of Cleveland and Golden State. None of which have the power to rig the NBA.

"The NBA is the WWE"

So Adam Silver goes into each locker room before each game and tells each team who is going to win tonight and tells the losing team to miss shots to make it look believable?

Okay.

I get people being mad that these games have turned into blowouts but for so many people to wholeheartedly believe the NBA is rigged blows my mind and makes me question how well a lot of people know the game of basketball.

Of course it's not actually rigged, but what else are we supposed to talk about?

I agree that it is not rigged. ABC/ESPN gets paid big time as I am sure game 7 ad monies are the highest. Next round of contract will take current performance into consideration.

^ this. I do NOT think the NBA games are rigged.

But if you ask who makes money on it, I would say first of all, the advertisers. There is great advantage to having a 7 game series verses a 4 game series. The advertisers want opportunity to get to targeted audiences. The more chances the better. If they are happy, they do it again next year and during the regular season. Secondly, the NBA benefits greatly by having a 7 game series. It generates interest and audience. It makes their advertisers happy so they can sell adverts to them again in the future.

So even if the NBA gets paid the same whether there are 4 or 7 games, the TV station benefits, the NBA benefits, and the advertisers benefit. Each of them generates more money, either now or in the future, by having a 7 game series.

Next, the fans benefit, but perhaps not monetarily. It just makes for great entertainment.

So, if you tend to believe in conspiracy theories, you would say the NBA makes this happen for all the reasons stated above. Or all of them get together and rig it.

But that's crazy talk.

If the public ever found out it was rigged, the NBA would lose their audience. And the advertising dollars would go away. So there is no way the NBA rigged the championship series, or any game, for that matter.

Tim Donaghy says no way...

The NBA is a war of attrition. 100+ games a year is too much. Each year there are 4-5 teams capable of winning a title. The title winner is that team least impacted by injury.

Did the Cavs whine last year when they were down 4 starters?

The team didn't have to. Fans did plenty on their behalf.

Not rigged, but refs are affected by crowds and do give preferential treatment to players or take on certain traits depending upon how games unfold. They are human after all.

Glad you brought him up. This dude tried to rig the NBA and he still couldn't do it. So tell me how the NBA is rigged when someone who tried to rig the NBA was unsuccessful at it?

Yes, that is crazy talk. The advertisers don't have the power to control the outcome of games. Not one iota.

Rigged is probably a strong word, but games can be influenced to help the chances of an outcome they want to happen. I have mentioned it before the NBA is a smart business. People would be crazy to believe that steroids are some how not amazingly involved in the NBA like other sports. However isn't it amazing how none of that ever gets mentioned and especially amazing how no stars ever get busted for anything. The NBA is smart they know it only hurts the league to bust it's star players and so no reason to even look into it.

Then look at Green with the Warriors I would be willing to bet Green gets suspended the Thunder series if they were winning that series but since they were losing he didn't get suspended. Just like this series since they were up he did get suspended.

Also if one thing we have learned from other sports people who get busted and then rat out others usually is telling the truth about the others. So when a former ref comes out and even says that refs have been told to try to possibly help extend a series or to then yeah it probably can be believeable. Obviously in basketball there is no way to completely rig a game to get a desired result. But a game can be influenced to try to help better the chances of a certain team winning.

Now yes the NBA already has got money for this, so they are not making more money the longer the series goes. But the longer the series goes the more the NBA gets talked about, the more popular it helps it, the higher the ratings. Meaning next time the rights for the NBA tv rights is up the higher the NBA can get its ratings the more money they can hold out for as leverage in tv negotiations.

So while I don't think the game is rigged as people say because you can't control who makes and misses shots. I do think the NBA does try to find away to influence games to help get a desired result. Which as i mentioned with the steroid stuff is just smart business by the nba. It's a business for them and it's about doing what is best for its business.

Which it's not just a nba thing. I think the nfl tries to influence results too, to get a desired outcome they want. It's all about doing best for those leagues because it at the end of the day is a business for them and they know us fans will always still be here.

You can't Rig a game but games can be influenced to try to help get a desired result. As I mentioned with my longer post. One thing we have learned from other sports is when cheaters start ratting out others, they end up usually telling the truth on who they rat out. So I don't think people can completely rule out what he says about the refs being told to help influence games to extend series. But as i mentioned I think this happens in the nfl too. You cant completely rig a game but can help influence it to better the chances of a desired team winning.

I believe that officials are sometimes instructed whether to call games loosely or not.

A proven cheater and liar with no integrity telling the truth is an oxymoron. I can't find myself believing anything he says until he starts naming names and showing more proof.

The same could have been said about Jose Canseco being a cheater and a liar. When in fact it ended up being he wasn't much of a liar at all. What he said ended up being true. Jose Canseco had no reason to lie and neither does this ref. One thing we have learned about sports over the years is usually where there is smoke there is fire and things end up being true.

It's sad that society is like this now but the track record in sports is that most things end up being true once things start being said.
