And it's also the most extreme because I know of NO other religion that demands the faithful practice their faith, five times a day.

I take it mamaw won't be seen wearing a burka anytime soon. Who knows...papaw make like . :)

No prayer rug for this ole boy, either. I'm sure there are good Muslim people just as there are good Christian folks but... Any spiritual act should have as its purpose loving other human beings. If it doesn't, it's likely more religious than spiritual and is likely more harmful than good.

I'm a blonde-haired , blue-eyed boy who grew up as Southern Baptist as you could be. I don't think a burka is anywhere in my future. :) I'm with you... seems odd. Very odd.

I believe you are on to something. Brainwashing seems to a part of a lot of religions/cults. It appears as those Islam is no exception. Thanks for your input.

Just like at the indoctrination factories that most colleges and universities have become.

When millennials have to have safe places so they don't have to be exposed to differing views.

Where if you don't toe the ideological line your now allowed to speak.

There's a lot nor in common with modern education and cults then you'd care to acknowledge.

Their are quirks, strange rituals and things that be viewed as extreme in every religion. Many Christians pray many times per day....in the morning, prior to each meal, and before bed. Not including all the prayer requests and chains the float around Facebook everytime someone gets ill or encounters a rough patch. Comedian Jim Gafigan does a very funny routine about strange Chrisitian practices....to paraphrase he mentions our Christmas tradition of cutting down a tree, dragging it into your house, decorating it and leaving it there for a month to celebrate the birth of Jesus. He also mentions our Easter practice or celebrating his rising from the dead by dying eggs and having a symbolic bunny deliver candy to the kids If you didn't grow up in the Christian religion many of the rituals would seem quite strange and extreme, at least as extreme as praying 5 times a day.

What's normal to one culture is likely strange to another.

That geography matters. Growing up In a secular state certainly helps as oppose to the Middle East and Africa.

Therein lies the misunderstanding of the Muslim world. The Quran mandates Islamic Theocracy under Sharia Law. There is no secular state in the Muslim world. That is why governments like Jordan and Saudi Arabia are targets of Jihad.

It amazes me that scholars of the Islamic faith have argued for centuries over the true interpretation of the Koran, yet we have Christians right here on BGP who have it all figured out and correctly interpreted. Truly amazing stuff!

And that's despite the fact that Christians can't agree on interpretations of the Bible.

For those who offer a simplistic view of literal interpretation of the Koran, how do you explain the differences in Islamic Theology? Shiites and Sunnis don't like each other for a reason. They see their religion differently.

I'm not sure if I've ever agreed with Bill Maher. I do find what he said here interesting.

Edit...that's not my title. It's the link to the YouTube video.

But can't Shiite and Sunni differences be traced to almost the start of Islam based on a matter of succession and leadership. Similar to the east and west split of Catholicism and Orthodox with a lot less continued violence.
