June 27, 201610 yr The way they got there was chaos - and an example of a referee totally losing control - but I'll say it again, I feel like soccer would get a big boost by playing 10 v 10. Just so much more wide open.
June 27, 201610 yr I was honestly cheering for Argentina. I'm a huge Messi fan. Heartbreak city for him tonight.

Just so much more wide open. And yet it was still a 0 - 0 match. I too am not a huge soccer person. The thing I don't like is all the flopping and then just laying on the ground screaming all usually done to try and get a call from a ref. I really think soccer would be much better off with post game reviews of players flopping. Any player who clearly flops, yellow card. It is funny how players never roll on the ground screaming on contact that happens on a clean tackle. No chance to influence a ref call so no flop. Sorry. I didn't mean to go over the top on that. I did enjoy the match tonight in spite of all the above. I am always amazed how the guys can catch the ball and stop it right there on hard kicks and 30 yard passes. That is the most impressive skill in soccer for me.
June 27, 201610 yr It really is a shame that casual fans really only check in on soccer during international tournaments because, quite frankly, it's just an inferior product. You get way more games like this one at the international level than you do in professional leagues. There's a lot less of the diving and falling, the reckless tackling, and the mediocre officiating in the top professional leagues in Europe.

I figured you would see the best in a big tournament like this. How do they control the flopping in the European leagues?
June 27, 201610 yr Interesting. I figured you would see the best in a big tournament like this. How do they control the flopping in the European leagues? The best play better when they train and practice and play together all the time. It's part of why the US looks so rough sometimes. Our players play in a dozen different leagues on two continents. Then they come together and try to get on the same page. But to answer your question, the professional leagues have been doing after-the-fact reviews for diving for a few years now and I think it's really helping. You still see guys exaggerate following contact, but you'll always have that. At the international level, games are more spaced out and -- especially in a championship game -- the benefit of taking a dive to try and win a crucial free kick or penalty far outweighs the drawback of a possible suspension for the next international game that's probably little more than a friendly.

June 27, 201610 yr Yeah I hope he back pedals on this. He's only 29 and still figures to be a huge part of Argentina's team for years.
June 27, 201610 yr Messi is likely just speaking with emotion in the heat of the moment. An accountant should never contemplate a career change on April 16th.
June 27, 201610 yr The save by Bravo off the Aguero header in extra time was spectacular. Everything about that play was why I love futbol.
