This issue goes deeper than that.

Here's an idea. Make all drugs legal. People who don't do drugs now probably still won't (there will be exceptions), and people who abuse drugs will die off and the problem will start to go away.

I like the idea of letting them die off through natural selection.

 

Unless you are giving the drugs away free and keeping all drug users locked away in a big commune you still have a big problem. The biggest public problem from drugs isn't that people buy and sell drugs. It is what people do to be able to buy their drugs...They commit crimes against the rest of us so they can pay for their habits. They do things under the influence that harm the rest of us.

 

I'd be willing to bet that 75% or more of all thefts and robberies are committed by people trying to pay for their addictions or want to get high.

 

Legalize drugs but unless they are free the crimes currently committed around drug use will continue.

It is lower for the poor, people of color, and young people. It appears that the public cares just as much about how people are treated by police as the crime rate."

Which if you are the Police means you are only 2.1% from going to Prison just for doing your job.

I'm 100% on board with legalizing all drugs. But I also don't think the government should pay for more government sponsored rehab. We will make it legal and you get bad off it isn't on the taxpayer to get you off them.

Build more prisons and fillem' up. Get even tougher on sentencing. Profile more, to be more efficient in catching criminals . That would help a bunch.

Once they get truly serious about drugs being manufactured out of our country and brought into our country illegally then the problem will be solved. Much like illegal immigration it is too big of a business for the government to truly attempt to shut down so the cycle will continue.

The mafia lost its strength more due to prohibition being lifted rather than anything law enforcement did. Once the selling of alcohol became legitimate, the criminal sides selling lost millions and they no longer had turf they needed to protect so gang violence plummeted also.

 

The same is true today only it is drugs instead of alcohol. Because there is demand for drugs and they cannot be sold legally, the illegal sale of drugs is incredibly profitable and because they are illegal, dealers have to protect their turf themselves with violence since you obviously cannot go to the police. You can lock up the dealers but the high profit of drug sales means a new dealer will step up and he will have to claim his turf most likely with violence.

 

I don't like the idea of legalizing drugs but I do acknowledge that our murder rate will stay high unless we do legalize drugs.

You can't legalize heroin, meth, etc. If you want to see the cemeteries fill up, just legalize those two drugs.

It's impossible to stop the illegal flow of drugs as long is there a lot of money to be made. Look at the billions we've spent already. The only way to stop illegal drugs is to make them legal nd let corporations run the . They are corrupt but they don't shoot people.
