The primaries are just a tool to eliminate any grass roots movements. A better option might be that any candidate with more than 20% of all votes cast during the primaries would be able to move on to the general.

April 21, 201610 yr I am all for revising the way delegates are assigned by the parties. I am 100% against any kind of general election with a boatload of candidates to choose from. Look at the disaster this Republican primary season has been and that should show you that a multitude of candidates is a bad thing, not a good thing.

The primaries became "more" democratic in the mid 1960's. Before that it was almost all decided by the party bosses.
April 21, 201610 yr Both parties may be more voter inspired today than they ever have been. Remember these people are hired by the party bosses to win in the fall. It's why the GOP don't want to hire Trump; he can't be anybody, but Republicans.

For a 3rd party to really make a run at the White House I think we will need to see a real Primary Race between 2 or 3 candidates to the point that the race is covered as much as the other two races are currently in the media. That will allow the 3rd party to get their message and candidates in front of a national audience. Until that happens all a 3rd party candidate will do is ensure defeat for the other candidate they are most like.
