March 14, 201610 yr I don't necessarily think anyone got screwed. I did think South Carolina deserved to be in though. The only team in the field I have a real struggle seeing is Tulsa. They're not any good.
March 14, 201610 yr Monmouth's challenge is 3 REALLY BAD losses. I don't think that bad losses should have as much weight as good wins, especially for a mid major. I'm sure the committee has no idea what happened in those games, there could have been any number of extenuating circumstances that played into those losses. I believe Monmouth should have been in over Syracuse, Tulsa, Wichita St. and Vandy.
March 14, 201610 yr Agree on Monmouth. Beat Notre Dame. Beat UCLA. Beat USC. Beat Georgetown. They don't ask me, but the Committee might be better served by giving who a team can beat more weight than who a team can lose to.
March 14, 201610 yr The Selection Committee needs to be made up of basketball people instead of cross country runners and administrators.
March 14, 201610 yr The 3 200+ RPI losses were in conference and all on the road. Both of those are mitigating factors. Bad losses admittedly, but more understandable than a home or out of conference loss to a very bad team. Committee is now demanding that mid-majors: schedule difficult out-of-conference (which means increased travel $ & reduced home games), win some and be competitive in all of those OOC games ("scheduling tough & losing doesn't help your resume" - unless you're from a Power 5 conference [Vandy]) AND don't have any slipups against your traditional rivals that know you and your personnel best on the road. Fail to check any of these boxes and we'll bounce you in favor of a middle of the pack team from a Power 5 that might be able to increase ticket sales at the site.
March 14, 201610 yr I think St Mary's was the most egregious snub. I think Tulsa was the most ridiculous team included. Swap those two. I get the case for Monmouth, but I am not nearly as aggravated over their exclusion as many others.

March 14, 201610 yr People only care/know about Monmouth this year because of the bench. :lol2: I agree with you. That's because most of us can identify with the "bench players.' :lol2:
March 14, 201610 yr Hey, South Carolina, play someone. The SEC does not give you enough quality wins and your OOC sucks. No pity from me. Vanderbilt played a nice OOC with teams like Purdue, Kansas, Baylor, and Dayton. SC played Hofstra and Tulsa. Vandy got the nod. I'm cool with that.
March 14, 201610 yr There's part of me that is glad I will not have to be inundated with the Monmouth bench. I got over that pretty quickly. Clever. I enjoyed it the first 10 times I saw it. The next 72? Not so much. Sadly, it's becoming a "thing" now. I'm way past being amused by Murray's "arrow" and the UK bench reaction.

March 14, 201610 yr South Carolina's OOC SOS is 271. Ha. Yup, they didn't even give themselves a chance for an at-large bid with that schedule.

I get the case for Monmouth, but I am not nearly as aggravated over their exclusion as many others. Again, I agree. What I want to know is what Monmouth could have done to earn an at-large bid. They played a strong schedule, and fared well in most of the OOC games. Do three (3) bad losses fully negate a couple quality wins? It's almost as if the selection committee inadvertently sent a message that if a mid major doesn't win the conference tournament, you're not in. Again, I get it, and I don't necessarily disagree, but am interested to see how it shakes out in the future.
