March 14, 201610 yr The answer is that the NIT has auto bids to all regular season conference champs that don't make the NCAA tournament. More so this year than any other season, the #1 seeds were beaten in the smaller tournaments. Thus less "at-large" selections for the NIT. Thanks. I didn't know that. I normally do not keep up with the NIT. However, it is disappointing that Evansville didn't get an invite as they had the best season that they have had in quite some time.
March 14, 201610 yr Which teams that actually had a chance of winning it all got snubbed? Is that a criterion for making the tournament??
March 14, 201610 yr Nope, neither is "deserved". Yeah, but you act like every school's realistic goal in the NCAA tourney is to win it all. The reality is some teams are fine with one win or a surprise SW16 trip. And the check for making the tourney is big, and they get bigger with each game you win.

If you just want to make it so your conference gets a bigger check then I got no sympathy for you. This is a tournament to crown the national champion. I really couldn't care less if the 40th best team in the country gets a chance at that.

But we all know that's not the realistic goal of all of them. The NCAA tourney isn't an "if you ain't first, you're last" proposition. If it was, why would Kentucky fans keep track of Final Four appearances?
