Best Country Record Ever

Featured Replies

Well, it's actually been decided. Sorry. No. 2 is decided as well.

1. "HonkyTonk Heroes" by Waylon Jennings — Billy Joe Shaver wrote most of the album, and totally threatened Waylon with bodily harm if he didn't record it. Totally metal.

2. "Red-Headed Stranger" by Willie Nelson — an easy No. 1 if it weren't for Waylon/Shaver.

3. "Chris Knight" by … Chris Knight — just go look him up and it will be easy to forget Luke Bryan and all the rest who sound just like him.

No. 3 was hard.

I don't really know which songs are on that particular record, but I enjoy Chris Knight's music quite a bit.

Where does a Johnny Cash record rate?

Old school country is SO much better...

Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison has to be in the discussion. But I don't have any problem with Jim's choices for #1 and #2. Cannot go wrong with either Willie or Waylon. Personally I really like George Strait's debut album Straight Country. I'd would probably be in my top 10.

I'm not familiar with Chris Knight, guess I should give him a chance. At first I thought it was included as a joke as not being familiar with Chris Knight I mistakenly thought it was Garth Brooks alter ego which was Chris Gaines. I know Jim loves him some Garth. :puke:

I restricted my list to studio albums only.

I will throw in "Kristofferson" and Dwight Yoakam's "This Time" to add to Jim's list.

Some to add into the mix

Jason Isbell - Elephant

Ray Charles - Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music

Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose

Townes Van Zandt - Live at the Old Quarter

I have never heard of Chris Knight but will check him out tonight:

Chris Knight (born June 24, 1960) is an American singer-songwriter from Slaughters, Kentucky. In addition to releasing solo records of his own material, Knight has had a successful career writing songs that have been recorded by Confederate Railroad, John Anderson, and Randy Travis among others.

If you are a fan of Waylon try listening to some of the stuff by Sturgill Simpson of Jackson, Ky. He's been on Conan and Letterman and I think has had a Grammy nomination. Also big buddies with another eastern Kentucky singer, Chris Stapleton.

Many people compare his sound to Waylen's.

Sturgill is hit or miss with me. Seems like his most popular song is "Turtles..." which I don't really like but "Long White Line", "Life ain't Fair", and "You can have the Crown" are great songs.

If you enjoy the outlaw country sound, I would also recommend checking out Whitey Morgan and Dallas Moore.
