There is good, and there is bad. The good is many of the items pointed out above about more people paying attention to politics, shaking up the status quo political scene and the pure entertainment of it all. The bad is I fear at the end of the day things will be more divisive and partisan than ever. There are very hard lines being drawn that no one will want to step across. That is not the way to get this nation moving forward. If Trump or Bernie or Hilary are elected, we will have the least productive most worthless Washington scene ever. As low esteem as Obama is held by many, Congress is even lower. My fear is it will be even worse after this election.

 

No doubt there are negatives as well. Agree totally. Politics has always been divisive and polarizing. Some of the early Presidential elections make today's look tame by comparison.

We can only hope. If this race is going to be a circus, at least have the ringmaster.

I think the Trump "phenomenon" has been good in that it has brought into focus the issue of whether the candidates - from both parties - are running for personal aggrandizement or for love of our country.

Trump has certainly shaken up the Republican establishment. If he wins the Presidency he will shake up the Democratic establishment as well. Perhaps that would be good for us all.

If he wins it will result in the R's losing more influence than the Ds have under Obama, and that's saying something! I'd rather Billary win and let the dems lose even more governorships, state representatives and congressional seats. It's a long term outlook.

This almost sounds like you want what's worst for the Democratic Party, not what's best for America. Gridlock in Government is becoming a major concern for me. If any of these candidates would promise to introduce term limit legislation I would be very interested.

You raise a good point, but I don't think this trend will continue with the same momentum under a Clinton presidency because (a) Clinton will be more centrist than Obama; (b) the obstructionist Republicans in Congress may be willing to strike more deals with a Clinton administration simply based on a change in personalities; © who knows what the GOP will look like after the Trump tornado does its thing.

I think Clinton will be as big a disaster for the dems as a Trump win will be for the republicans.

While I agree that there need to be term limits it will never happen. It would require a constitutional amendment and there's no way that I can ever see that king of super-majorities about anything again.

Obviously, a lot of what we've seen and heard has been downright embarrassing. . But has anything good come from it? I can think of a few but I'll list a couple and let you guys and gals add to it if you like.

 

1. I think Trump has really gotten more people engaged in politics. His rallies are must see TV. People that never watch political debates tune in to see what Trump is going to unload on his competitors. I even had a number of my Prob&Stats students who knew about the New Hampshire primary and that Trump and Bernie Sanders won their respective NH primaries. In the past, that would have never been the case. If more people are becoming engaged in political matters, then I see that as a positive. You have to admit, things wouldn't be quite as interesting had the Trumpster not been running.

 

2. I think the Trump phenomenon(and the Feel the Bern, too) has sent a huge message to both political parties. This should be a huge wake-up call that people are fed up with the same old way abusing the people's trust and failing to find a way to do the people's business. If the political establishments get the message and America is the beneficiary, then this will have been a positive.

Another 20 years of what we have been getting from our Federal Government , and the revolution would be more that political. Free Trade Agreements, Guest Worker Programs, Disgusting Standard of Care for our Veterans, Congressmen that stay in office forever. The incidence of mass violence is an indicator of the discontent with our government.

 

Trump is the candidate for the electorate to express its rage with its government. Better a Trump Presidency than revolution.

Whether good, bad, or indifferent Trump has exposed the power of sensationalism in our sound byte, social media driven culture. And it's working for him!

 

The other thing he has exposed is that there's more diplomacy exercised in a kindergarten sand box at recess... :lol2:

 

I'm still waiting for candidates to provide concrete ideas on solutions and how they'll go about implementing them...I'm not going to hold my breadth!!! :wacky:
