HAMPTON — Salem’s Matt McLaughlin thought he hit a game-winning, buzzer-beating 3-pointer just inside midcourt on Friday night against Winnacunnet.

However, the officials ruled McLaughlin’s shot never went in the basket and the Warriors escaped with a 46-44 win in this Division I boys basketball game.

“I think everybody in the gym saw that ball go in,” Salem coach Rob McLaughlin said. “It wasn’t an issue with time, they (the officials) are claiming the ball never went through the basket.”

Coach McLaughlin, the father of Matt, immediately filed a protest with the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association.

“We’ll hand it over to the ADs and see where it goes from there,” coach McLaughlin said. “There is no doubt, there’s no doubt in my mind that ball went in. They (the officials) said it never went in. They said it missed and hit the bottom of the net. There’s a disagreement and we’ll let the process play out and go from there.”

Winnacunnet coach Jay McKenna had no comment after the game. Winnacunnet is 8-6, while Salem is 4-8.

Winnacunnet junior Liam Viviano drove to the basket and was fouled with 6.6 seconds left in regulation with the score tied at 44-44. Viviano hit both free throws and Salem immediately inbounded the ball and got the ball to Matt McLaughlin.

“We have to recover from this,” coach McLaughlin said. “Every team faces adversity as you go. We’ll have to battle and go through the process. I thought my kids played and fought hard. We have to recover and bounce back.”

Viviano led all scorers with 22 points, while Anthony Primavera had eight points and Shackiel Boyd and Freddy Schaake each had five.

Griffin Curtis led Salem with 14 points, while Matt Vartanian had 10.

It looks like it went in, but watching that video it's honestly hard to tell with the player getting up into the net at the moment the ball would have been going through the net.

Since this is high school, I doubt they will have a review of film from some dads camera that will over rule the call.

Really hard to tell.

I think it pretty obvious that ball did not go in. Looks like the right call to me. If you slow it down and look the rim is never in front of the ball as it should be if that ball goes through.

This angle seems to show it going in.

Salem vs. Winnacunnet Basketball Game Ends in Controversy

At first when I saw this angle I was like "oh my goodness, that ball did go in" But when I slowed it down it looks short as from this angle the front of the rim should disappear as the ball goes through but it does not (you can see all the rim as the ball looks in the cylinder, if good the ball should block out part of the rim as it passes through the cylinder). The way the net popped up is the deception in my opinion. I have no stake in the fight, just looks like it was the right call to me. Take your time and look at it very close. Again I may be wrong, just what I think.

Sure seems like it went in to me. It you use both angles I don't see how it didn't. It wasn't short and it wasn't left or right. The other teams reaction says it all as well.

I blew it up and slowed it down. 99% sure it went thru. The entire net went straight up after the ball went thru, just like it should. Had the ball hit the front of the net it would have not did that. And as high as the ball was in the air, the angle it came down if it missed the front of the rim, it would have barely made contact with the net. My eyes could be deceiving me, bit I don't think so.
