SEC Coaches On Ulis and SEC POY

I can remember UK Basketball pretty well starting around 1983/84...I have said since mid season, Ulis is the best Point Guard I have watched at UK...

After these last few games, I am beginning to think Ulis maybe the best player I have watched play for UK. I know that is saying a lot, but what he is doing this year IMO is simply remarkable. His basketball IQ is so high and his intangibles are so good, he is in the discussion as the best all around "basketball" player I have seen at UK.

In my mind there is no doubt he should be SEC POY and has a very strong case for National POY. I don't know if i have seen a player have as much of an impact on his team than Ulis has on this team. Just imagine what we would look like without him...yikes.

Maybe this is too early in the season/ thread, but what do you all think the chances are that he comes back next year? Is it a certainty because his size, or do you think that NBA scouts will take notice of performance and dismiss the height concerns?

I personally think he's gone after this year. Seems like it will be a weaker draft class. How much higher is his ceiling really?

That's not a knock, more of a testament to how good he's playing.

I agree with that to an extent. I think is depends more on where he is projected to go. If he is projected in the first round, then I think he should go. However, if he is projected towards the middle to late 2nd round, then I think it would do him good to stay another year. His ceiling may not be much higher, but another year could show that he can consistently stay at his ceiling.

Or if you are going to spend a couple of years in the D League, is that really better than being at UK? I don't know that answer.

Ulis looks like a kid who may want to win a championship if it's between that and a 2nd round pick.

I get the sentiment. But to the bolded, no.

Kenny Walker "carried" UK in '85 and '86 on his back. Playing a hybrid Forward/Center position.

Jamal Mashburn did the same from '91 to '93.

Each made the other players around them perform better while carrying the load of "Go to" guy. :thumb:

Mashburn was my only hick up in this discussion...however I will say with Mashburn he had a tendency to get into foul trouble in big games...

Obviously I think Ulis has to carry this team to an elite 8 if not Final 4 to really cement his legacy.

I have followed UK basketball since 1968. I would take Ulis over any point guard from that point to present. If he stays 4 years, he'll go down as one of the all time greats.

I'll take John Wall.

Hard to argue against an NBA allstar. Ulis is clearly a better shooter, and maybe a better leader, but IMO John Wall has the edge in every other category.
