As a Beechwood parent, money is not everything. Why would we give up home court.

I applaud Beechwood AD Wera for passing up the additional money and supporting her team by giving them home court advantage. Wera has done a great job as AD. She hired Coach Goetz in a move that was difficult to make considering he replaced a Beechwood alum. Now she is supporting Coach Goetz and his team in every way she can. You have to respect and appreciate that.

Ever hear the old saying "be careful what you wish for"? Holmes may be down but they won't roll over for any of the other 3 teams.

 

That's exactly what I meant. Even though Beechwood, HC, and CovCath have beaten Holmes already, none of the three want to draw them in the first round. None of them!!!!

I get the fact that it's hard to pass up on the home court advantage, but it quite possibly could be some of the best games most of us will never see.

 

I was told Holmes offered their gym, and Beechwood would have to pay ZERO rent and get to keep ALL the gate money.....Holmes would get the concessions money. Also, Holmes offered to provide all the gate and concession workers.

It's their turn to host, any AD would stand up against pressure to give up what is their school's rightful turn. I know it's all about money and audience but that can also be applied to increased school spirit for the host school and their players.

I don't blame the Beechwood AD one bit for keeping it at home, but from a hoops fan perspective it stinks with only 150 tickets offered to the general public.

 

Should be a very interesting tourney depending on how the draws comes out.

How nuts would it be if they draw CCH and beat them again, and CCH doesn't make the regional?

 

I can assure you that CovCath is hoping they draw HC in the 1st round of districts. They would enjoy very much the chance to end their season.

Start the "everyone loves the atmosphere of the close gyms" thread. While I appreciate the fact that they rotate the districts through the schools the district loses a lot of revenue by not having enough capacity to hold the crowds that they could accommodate at a larger venue. Imo it causes fans to lose interest in even trying to go. I can remember getting shut out of district games at Holmes with 3000 seating capacity. I wouldn't even attempt to go to a district game with 750 capacity.

 

I guess you can follow the games on the Internet. Back in the stone-age 60's, PCHS & BCHS & MCHS & HCHS had new gyms and I can remember waiting in line for around an hour at least, to buy a ticket and some years it became sold-out. Then we got in the car to pick up the game on WFTM-AM, and drove closer to Maysville until we picked up the game. We actually had fun doing it, no one wanted the host team to give up their turn. But in those days adults were not as enthusiastic fans like now. Became easier to see the game as a Varsity cheerleader but the other memories I think of and smile. Part of growing up and learning to share, something a lot of people need to learn. Sure makes life easier later on when you KNOW you have the best here in the USA. Guess that's my Sunday night sermon.

From 1987 until 1996 the 35th District was made up of:

while during this period the 36th was made up of

 

Campbell Co.

Highlands

Brossart

Silver Grove

Scott

 

Previous to '87 the 34th looked like this as far back to 1966.

1965 was the last year that Covington Grant was apart of the 34th.

From 1988-1996 the 34th was

With Villa coming aboard in 1993 and then in 1997 the 34th changed to what it mostly looks like now with the exception that Beechwood was in the 34th while Ludlow was in the 35th, then those two teams switched in 2006 with Ludlow going to the 34th and Beechwood to the 35th.

 

I could go on and on with more district breakdowns as well as when some 9th Region teams broke off and went to the 8th or the 10th, but to I'm already getting carried away with trying to answer the initial question of when Holmes used to be in the same district as Newport, NewCath, Dayton, and Bellevue.

 

From 87-96 when Holmes was moved to the 35th, HC had a great run. Regional finals in 89, lost to Scott. Regional champs in 91, lost to Tate's Creek in the State Semis. Regional finals in 93, lost to Conner on a last second shot. Regional champs in 94, lost to Muhlenburg North in the State Quarterfinals.

CCH is the # 1 seed and will play Holmes.
