I find this fascinating as the Catholic schools in this neck of the woods aren't really under the authority of the Archdiocese of Louisville at least in the same way. There is no districting or restrictions on who goes where around here.

 

DeSales, St.X, Sacred Heart and Mercy were all founded by religious orders. Only Trinity, Assumption, and Holy Cross are/were tied to the diocese. Presentation I am honestly not sure about.

 

This level of oversight by the diocese of Covington is definitely different.

 

Presentation's administration is strange. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth relinquished direct control of the school 20 years ago or so. They gave it to Spalding University, which now administers the school.

 

However, the Sisters of Charity also have some relationship with Spalding. They founded the university as well. I don't know exactly how that relationship works.

There are not out of district tuitions at some schools. All you need be is a member of any parish in the Diocese to qualify for the lowest tuition rate.

But you are not saying the Diocese should have handled the matter completely are you? I would think the Diocese should want the KHSAA to intervene in this matter. If the Diocese addresses it and says they stopped whatever wrong-doing there was would you be satisfied? I sure would not. It is not up to the Diocese to address the wrong-doing and be judge and jury. The best thing they should be doing is notifying the KHSAA if they believe a wrong was committed.

Exactly on the diocese website they still list Prince of Peace as a CCH feeder but I'd venture to guess 90% go to Holy Cross and get the lowest tuition rate.

I don't see anything wrong with that. I am a member of St. Mary parish but sent my daughter to NCC. Why shouldn't I have gotten the same parish rate as their feeder schools? It's all the same Diocese.

There isn't a problem with it. It goes to my point the Diocese doesn't have a strict feeder school system. They haven't in my lifetime. What you described is common practice.

 

It's why in the other thread I find it odd other Catholic schools may be a part of it. Every school has benefited from it.

 

Public school is different. But the diocese is basically one open enrollment district.

I really have no problem with a kid choosing a private high school if they are already in a private school. Meaning I can deal with the diocese being open enrollment. However, this is really only a minor part of the issues and 3 of the 4 kids that are already there came from public schools. The other came from a private school in Ft Thomas. So if we are relating this thread to the other, the private to private is a very minor part of it compared to the other infractions.

What if the parents were sending the kids to public schools until they had saved up enough to send their kid to a private school? That sort of thing isn't uncommon.

I have no issue with it at all. All I'm saying is regardless of what people feel about private schools having feeders and if it's okay for a private high school to cross over to other "feeders", really isn't a big part of what we are talking about with this issue. I'm all for a family doing what they feel is best for their children, as long as they weren't influenced by the athletic department of that school...regardless if we are talking private or public.

 

As you probably know from the football forum, I have no problem with the private schools. I defend you guys all the time. I have said many times, line up and play whoever is on the other side of the ball. I do have a problem when any school that doesn't follow the rules.

 

Again, all I'm saying is that if we are trying to attach this thread about Catholic feeder school issues to the other thread, that is a VERY small part of what we are talking about. In almost every infraction they are looking into, it's not kids coming from the private schools. Now the tuition stuff may have some diocese interest, but I have no idea what will come from that. I do know they have ways of checking that as well.

I think anytime two or more Diocese schools are at odds with each other it is definitely a Diocese matter unless the Diocese chooses to ignore some KHSAA rules.

In a perfect world or diocese, districting would be a perfect business model. This would provide an even distribution of students by residential area, with each being provided equal facilities comparable to each other district high school in the diocese.

 

However, it isn't a perfect world, and family ties, athletic advantage, and outside influences weigh in.

 

I would like to see the diocese institute a standard, across-the-board method of determining tuition assistance. Some of us (or just us) send out applicants' financial information to an outside company which makes the determination for us. Most others however, determine the need and assistance in-house. This allows outside influences (superior athletes/preferred students status) to enter into the decision making process and could influence funding distribution. .

 

There are other ways to get around tuition assistance - Work Study Programs.

 

Are work-study programs being used to legitimately allow a needy student to earn tuition dollars through after-school programs? Certainly most are, but are all beneficiaries who are a credit to their school in other areas (athletics/academics) actually performing the duties that are paying his/her tuition, OR are work-study programs being used to cover up actual assistance allowing a superior athlete to attend that particular school???? This is not an accusation, simply a legitimate question (fueled by rumor and innuendo) that should be looked in to.
