This was NCAA right, clock stops inside of 1 minute left after made basket.

I'd have been suspended just like the officials. I'd pulled a Jeff Stowers and send my kids to the locker room while I extracted my pound of flesh.

The players who left the bench thought the game was over because the clock showed zero & the horn had sounded. They did not have the privilege of replay that the officials had.

They could and should have cleared the floor and let the other team inbound for that .4 seconds. No technical necessary. They earned that suspension.

First of all, I don't disagree that there was another way to do this...however, you didn't answer my original question: Do we know what happened the other 39 minutes, 59.6 seconds prior to this so that the officials may have made that call ?

 

Secondly, "misapplication of the rules" is a term used when an official follows the rule book, but someone has a different opinion about how they "should" have handled the situation. 100% of the time this is in hindsight.

 

It is always much easier for anyone to find fault with "misapplied" rules and what could or would have happened...that does not always mean that the spirit of the rule was violated or that the officials were wrong.

Why is it so hard for basketball officials to just call the game instead of becoming part of it?

 

Because officials have massive egos.
