KY Judge Olu Stevens gives man 60 days in jail for using racial slur after hearing

"Is there something that you wish to say to me?" Stevens asked Satterly.

Satterly's attorney, who was present during the bond hearing, had already left the courtroom. Satterly told Stevens he was talking to his brother, not the judge.

"No, no, no, I didn't mean it like that," Satterly said, according to the video.

"Oh, you didn't mean it like that?" the judge responded tersely, telling Satterly he was holding him in contempt of court. "You don't speak those words in here. And that word particularly, you don't use that word. I'm going to give you 60 days for having used that word. I'm going to hold you in contempt right now for having used it in this courtroom. It's disrespectful; don't ever do it again."

It is at least the third time in the last year the issue of race has come up in Stevens' courtroom. Stevens, who is black, had stopped hearing cases for a few weeks in the wake of a scolding by Kentucky's chief justice and an ongoing investigation by the Judicial Conduct Commission over his comments alleging top prosecutor Tom Wine wants "all-white" juries.

I don't agree with I'm guessing he said. But can a sitting District Judge just wave away the 1st Amendment?

In this case, I agree with the judge, you have to be very careful, heck, just have common sense, in a courtroom, or you will be charged with contempt.

Yes he can. Always has been.

Don't mouth off to a judge.

Especially in his own courtroom!

Unfortunatlely "contempt" doesn't require much to back up....

If you pop off in open court, then you get what you get, however....some judges are well known for their bench antics / enforcement / power trips. This just sounds like another one....

From what I have heard/read about this guy, I question if he should be on the bench. However, I don't necessarily question this. Not sure about 60 days for it, BUT, keep your freaking mouth shut in the court house/room and act like you got a little common sense, even if you don't. if you do that, then you won't find yourself in this situation.

He could have jailed the guy for 179 days.

I have great respect and reverence for the court. It irritates me to no end when people answer a judge with "yeah" or "naw".

I do believe Judge Stevens was within his power to find this guy in direct contempt. Just a shame it was this judge. That's the only reason it made the news. He's lightning rod. Of his own making, of course. This happens daily across the Commonwealth with a variety of judges.

I believe the Judge has reduced the sentence to one day.

That sounds about right.

I'll just say this...I've never been in front of Judge Stevens, but I have been in the courtroom in Louisville before, and witnessed behavior by people that had me astounded. Whatever Judge Olu Stevens' faults, and I have no idea whether his actions actually warrant lightning rod status or not, I would think that his fellow judges have to be applauding that he's doing something about what goes on by the residents of this city and county. Some of these people have no idea how to act in public.

He's a loose cannon and well deserves his lighting rod status. No problem with this though.

I think he'd better tone it down a bit or the Ky. Supreme Court/Judicial Ethics Commission will be calling on him shortly.

They are already investigating him and the Chief Justice has already reprimanded him also.

He deserves to be investigated and has earned his lightning rod status.

When you basically call a sitting Commonwealth Attorney a racist and call a white family that was victim to a home invasion by black perps racist, yeah, you earned it.
