Congratulations to these six coaches for being named the Courier Journal's Coaches of the Year for 2014

Well deserved, in every case. :thumb:

1A Joe Chirico - Paintsville

2A John Edge - Owensboro Catholic

3A Philip Haywood - Belfry

4A Brandon Smith - South Warren

5A Chris Larkey - North Laurel

6A Chris Wolfe - Male

Chirico has done a fantastic job at Paintsville and deserves recognition. I would have named Chris McNamee as COY in Class 1A this year however. He did a masterful job at Pikeville in 2014 and had his team extremely well prepared for the title run.

I agree.

I also can't see how Clay Clevenger didn't get the 2A nod at Danville. No Offense, but Edge basically returned everything from last year and still couldn't get out of the Regional Finals... Clevenger basically brought one of Kentucky's proudest programs back from the scrap heap.

That is what makes it tough when these come out you can promote your coach/player without diminishing someone else. You are going to penalize John because he was knocked out by the state champ at their place. I think Clay would be deserving of the award but John is also very deserving.

He's not "my coach"

I have no allegiance to either team except for the fact to me Clevenger was the most deserving guy for the 2A COTY

Chirico did a wonderful job over the past two years. However, I agree, it should have been Coach Mac in my opinion. But it is par for the course, after seeing how few of the Panther players have been recognized on the various "all whatever" teams. It's a shame really, because several of hem had outstanding years.

Shoutout to Chris Larkey, he had a heck of a year and may have done the best coaching job of all with North Laurel.

The 11-2 Jags became a solid top 10 (top 5?) team in 2014 and reached program heights. They were a tight 4 point loss to the eventual 5A Runner Ups away from the semifinals and a shot at Highlands.

Congrats, Coach Larkey. Great job!!

Edge did not return everyone. He had a young OL and a ver very young D lead by only with 2 seniors.

Joe Morris should of won. He won 4 straight state titles. Brought mayfield from from 1a to 2a when everyone doubted them.

Clay should of won too.

I definitely have no dog in this fight, but I'm shocked Clay Clevenger didn't get the nod.

Catholic did not return everyone. They only had 13 seniors in the roster and only 7 start. That's hardly returning everybody.

Catholic lost a RB, LB, 3WR, and linemen and everyone said they were DONE. "Zuberer will have to do it ALL"

Look, Clevenger could of won the award, but the guy that should of won it over both them didn't.

Joe Morris should of won!! Period! 4 state titles in a row and won 2-A after EVERYONE said noway mayfield wins 2-A. Except the Mayfield people. They are the only ones who believed.

Joe Morris should of won 2-A. My opinion the coach that wins state should be coach of the year in the class. Clevenger won 2-A coach of the year by the coaches association, right?

No one else could have got out of the region either. I will play homer here, Morris did it again in a new larger class with only a so so team by Mayfield standards. Morris would get my vote but that said , there are several coaches mentioned here that were all worthy. Congrats to Edge, he got a ton out of OC this year

Congrats to all winners. Just wanted to give a shout out to Coach Jamie Reed from South Oldham. Took a team predicted to go 2-8 with all they lost from the year before and turned in a 10-3 season. Came within 1 point of going to semi-finals in 5A. Best season South Oldham has had since 1992 -- he really has turned the program around. Great job coach!!
