I do agree with this, but it's also precisely why I find him so troubling. I think he knows how to appeal to a certain segment of Americans and I think he knows how to sell himself as their savior. That gives him a certain amount of power on its own; he's tapped into something unnerving about our society and he knows how to harness it.

 

To the extent his policy ideas can be gleaned, there's a strain of authoritarianism that undergirds them. His ideas appear unconcerned with the reality of how our government is designed and what constraints are placed on the office he's after. It is an equation for a crisis of republicanism: He will fix problems and he will do so because he is a powerful man and anyone or anything in his way is a weakness and he will have a gaggle of unswerving supporters cheering him on.

 

FWIW, Cruz is more frightening to me. He's more egomaniacal than people perceive Trump to be and he's far more shrewd as a politician. Trump would be up against a Congress unlikely to give him what he wants - and dare I think might fight back - but I expect that Cruz would abuse them into submission. I really don't know what Cruz would do or wants with all of that power either, but even taking his policies at face value would give us an extreme and cruel government.

 

This is an an extreme over exaggeration of Cruz.

The fact that everyone is ignoring this post right here is troubling and just another reason why discussing politics is a waste of time these days. Habib broke it down so well no one wants to engage in this debate with him.

I'm a Rand guy but if I were defending Cruz it would be easy.

 

He is a proven fiscal conservative who doesn't bow to his own party. A graduate of Princeton and Harvard Law school. Someone respected liberal law proffesor Alan DERSHOWITZ calls one of the select few brightest students out of over 10 thousand he has taught.

 

He was a Law Clerk for a supreme court justice , Solicitor General for Texas and now a US Senator.

 

He has a plan to reform the tax code and cut spending. All published and public.

Habib is correct. Cruz is scarier than Trump.

 

If Trump and Cruz are indeed 1-2 in the polls, then the far right has successfully hijacked the GOP.
