Can an Agnostic Still Get Chills During a Church Service? I did.

Featured Replies

During church service yesterday, a young lady by the name of RoseAngela Merritt performed. She sang my favorite Christmas song, "Oh Holy Night." I always liked John Berry's version but this woman blew me away yesterday. Is it hypocritical for an agnostic like me , who is distrusting of religion, to get a little emotional at church?

I wanted to share her rendition of the song with you folks and see what you think. As I've mentioned on here a couple of times, I enjoy listening to contemporary Christian music at times. It's more uplifting and positive than country or rock(both of which I like as well) and positive energy is always a good thing, even when you don't necessarily agree totally with the message .

Anyway, if you wouldn't mind, take a listen to Rose and tell me what you think. I like the whole arrangement, especially towards the end, so view the whole performance. I'll be glad to let her know what you think when I talk to her again. Thanks.

To answer your question, not at all.

As I have mentioned before I don't apply a specific label to my spirituality or questioning, but certain spiritual songs definitely can have an emotional effect on me for various reasons...such as memories, family, loved ones...etc...

At times as well, depending on what and how it's said, spoken and written inspirational messages from others can touch my emotions.

With those, this would typically happen when least expected if they seem to be hitting my head and heart at a time where they hold significant meaning to me, and the timing is coincidentally goose bumpingly in line with certain thoughts that might've been recently heavy on my mind.

I liked very much Rose's rendition of "Oh Holy Night" as it was quite nice. In keeping with the spirit of that song, it brings to mind another version that has always held a special a special place for me.

Lucian Pavarotti - Oh Holy Night

Sung both in English and Italian... so perfect...so emotional...

Daughter and a high-school classmate sung this at a couple of local churches a few years back. While not quite this quality, not as far off as you might think.

Probably brought a tear or two to papa's eyes, I bet?

Ol' papa is a proud papa. Daughter's singing got herself $10K a year from Georgetown College. A regret is that being so busy in graduate school has pretty much stopped her singing in its tracks.

Time is the great enemy of us all. Never enough time to do all that we'd like. Maybe once she's finished with school she can pick it back up.

John Berry's version of "Oh Holy Night" is very nice as well. This is the one a lot of FM stations play around the Christmas holiday.

I know that feeling. Was highly involved in music programs in high school and in college. Disappeared in law school and it's never come back. It's this time of year that makes me miss it the most.

Okay... you are an agnostic and REALLY do not like church/Christianity/religion...

... but you recently were in a church and heard this young lady sing O Holy Night and you got emotional? Yeah right. How many times have you gone to Newspring Church? I know they try to make it easy to attend by having congregations in several locations-----in South Carolina!!

Okay, Science Friction, you didn't hear this woman sing in church. What game are you playing?

BTW, to answer your question--it was awful and seemed insincere. Just awful.

He has dementia. This was from 2010.....He just got his years off a few. Everyone is entitled to a mistake and now we have granted him grace....

Holy Spirit. Just sayin'.

First time I've ever seen Holy Spirit spelled like that

What an awful, awful response. Just terrible. Yes, I am clearly not a fan of religion and have seen a lot of terrible things done in the name of religion. However, I am an extremely spiritual person(you don't have to have religion to be spiritual). In addition, I love music, including Contemporary Christian music. I have many very devout Christian friends that I associate with and when they invite me to church, I sometimes go. Anything wrong with a person skeptical of religion going to church every now and then?

I know very well about Newspring and yes, I saw and talked to RoseAngela on Sunday, not in South Carolina , but in a church in my hometown here in KY!!! In fact, she showed me the website where I could view some of her work.

If anyone thinks it's hypocritical for me, as a non-religious but very spiritual person, to attend church, please let me know. I didn't think I was doing anything terribly bad.
