Bishop Brossart 64 Newport 54

Final per the update thread.

Brossart starting the season strong.

Stangs with a very nice showing tonight, although they almost blow it in the end.

1st half the Stangs could do no wrong, except for boxing out on both sides of the court, and it was just the opposite for the Wildcats. However, the 2nd half Brossart came out playing in what appeared to be a passing game and not running what they did in the 1st half, and to Newport's credit they took advantage. The Wildcats started to double up the ball and amped up the pressure forcing the Stangs into some turnovers. Newport did get it to single digits, but Brossart was able to maintain a double digit led going into the 4th at 46-34......then things got cooking.

The Newport pressure, and with Brossart's Jackson Crawford saddled with 4 fouls, the Wildcats get the score trimmed down to 47-41 with 5:23. The Stangs turn it over and Newport scores to make it 47-43 with 4:45 left. It's 51-47 with 3:20 to go an the Stangs turn it over, but Newport fails to capitalize and following 2 Brossart FT's it's 53-47 with 2:50 left. The two teams then trade turnovers, and Newport misses two ABSOLUTE gimme's, and on a couple of FT's the Stangs are up 55-47 with 1:33 remaining.

On Newport's next possession, Marcus Mullins drives the lane, scores, and gets Crawford to commit his 5th foul to make the score 55-49 with and 1 coming up with 1:28 left.

Now it gets really crazy.........As Mullins is about to be handed the ball to shoot the "and 1" Coach Snapp instructs one of his players to go into the game, and instead of reporting to the scores table....he races onto the floor drawing the Technical Foul . Mullins misses the "and 1", and the Brossart player hits both FT's and on the ensuing play the Stangs connect on 2 more FT's to make it 59-49 with 1:24 and sealing the game.

Brossart got it done with 16 turnovers in the second half, congrats to the Stangs. Not 100% sure, but I thought they won 64-52.

I knew they had a bunch, but didn't think it was that many....good lord.

Anyone have stats?

Anyone have stats?

TAC might know. It wasn't pretty there for awhile.

I left the stats with @Mustang, it's in your pile of goodies. Didn't think the TO number was that high?

Kid runs on floor without checking in? Is this 3rd grade hoops? Terrible mistake which sounds like was pivital.

BGP reunion at the Newport Middle School tonight. A plethora of posters in the house (trying to rival the CovCath/Cooper contingent), as well as many clipboards (Highlands, Scott, NCC , to name a few).

A few college scouts present to witness Snapp and Crawford. Steve Ridder (Embry Riddle) also in attendance (tho that was a surprise visit to see family and his nephew John-Boy Ridder play).

All-in-all, an enjoyable, spirited early-season high school basketball game.

Bad finish for newport.. Mullins is a nice player.plays hard and Holmes sure misses him .

Apparently, the rumors of the Mustangs demise were greatly exaggerated and I'm happy to see this. Newport is a solid basketball team....
