December 2, 201510 yr Some may know that I with my career I have taken several courses involving "active shooter" situations. But if you do not have the money or time to do some of this training, FEMA offers a free online course that I think takes about 30 or so minutes. It's good for anyone, especially if you are in management or lead at your work, as most people will follow and or listen to those people. I would also suggest having everyone in your family take this free course as well. https://training.fema.gov/is/courseoverview.aspx?code=IS-907
December 3, 201510 yr I saw an interview with the Washington DC Police Chief on 60 minutes, last week I think. She said the direction they now give are 1) Flee if Possible 2) Barricade in place if Possible 3) If all else fails, Fight don't just stand there waiting to get shot. Old Direction was to run away or to comply with gunmen and hope to survive.
December 3, 201510 yr We just had active shooter training where I work and what JD said is exactly what was taught.

At one point in time people were told that there is safety in large groups. At this point in time, large groups of people are targets. When terrorists are involved, domestic, whatever. The last place I would want my loved ones to be is in a large group of unarmed people.

December 3, 201510 yr A well placed shot to the cranium is the quickest way to neutralize a shooter. Dont get caught without protection. #FarooqSaeed
December 3, 201510 yr She never said to get in a large group of people, she said to 1)Flee 2)Barricade 3) Fight back I didn't see the interview so I can't really comment on that. But I can tell you one of the last places I would want to be is in a locked room with numerous other people. Fight back, then flee would be my number one and two. Backing myself into a corner (barricading) with multiple other people would be my last choice. That said, I would have a hard time fleeing unless I knew everyone else was with me on that.

I think the idea of barricading is to do it in a way the shooters couldn't get in...not just jumping in a closet and shutting a door. Many schools and some businesses now have devices to secure their doors in case of an active shooter, that's more in line with what I think she meant. Another key point was that in the case of Terrorist (Extremist) taking hostages isn't a negotiating ploy...it is done to draw attention and to drag out the event as long as possible before killing the hostages and themselves in most cases. Said police have to be ready to go in immediately in cases like that to reduce the numbers that are killed. Talked about how Paris Police worked under the old plan of containing and then pooling resources...took 35 minutes before they attempted to rescue hostages, which in the end were nearly all killed.
December 3, 201510 yr I misspoke earlier...it is 1) Run 2) Hide 3) Fight Hear is a link...When calling 911 isn't enough - CBS News
