State Final Site

Why are the final games not played at Louisville or UK? As an outsider, WKU makes no sense for 3/4 of the state. It seems like UK and Louisville are much more neutral as far as travel and it seems like most kids are huge UK fans so that would make more sense. Why would any team have to travel over 4 hours to play a championship game?

Games used to be at UL Papa Johns semi-recently but UL did not bid again (mostly because two dates are needed) and WKU was the only venue to bid on the games. UK was not turf then so 6 games in 2 days on grass was not a good idea.

WKU size-wise is about the best situation teams could hope for. Big enough to hold attendance for most games and not so big that a 5000 attendance game looks out of place.

There are a few reasons

The games used to be in Louisville, but one year there was a scheduling conflict with the Big East and UofL and they couldn't guarantee that the weekend would be available for the finals, although both parties were starting to become fed up with each other.

At that time, Commonwealth Stadium was a grass surface and neither side wanted the games played there.

A big reason why it's still at WKU though is because Russell is the primary sponsor for it and they are based out of Bowling Green.

WKU is the perfect the spot. There is not a better spot in the state. Bowling Green is the perfect size double sided stadium, it's very nice. The town has enough nice hotels and restaurants, plus it is easy to get around. No big city driving.

When it was held at Louisville you'd have 15,000 people in a 50,000 seat stadium, fans were far away from field. it was awful. If the KHSAA is smart, they will do what ever they can to keep at WKU.

Could not agree more. Having been to final games at UL and WKU my experiences at WKU were leaps and bounds better than at Papa John's stadium.

Just out of curiosity how much did the tickets go up, when the games were moved to Western. If they went up at all.

Here in Ohio if you buy at the gate, at the horse shoe it is an unbelievable 15 bucks a game.

The two packets you can get for all 7 games are 86 for one(I think that is it) and 104 for the other packet.

That's my biggest reason for watching on live on TV.

I would have to agree with @PurplePride92, WKU is an AWESOME place to watch the game......far better then Papa John's.

However, the drive absolutely SUCKS!!!

I feel you on the drive but I've never been one worried about the drive if I commit to go to the game. Commonwealth Stadium would be the perfect place for me. :D

The atmosphere at WKU is something that makes those games special.

I hear people complain about the drive but it is still 2 hours for Mayfield and they are in WKy.

Most of the state events is in Louisville or Lexington. It is okay for people to drive towards the Westfpe football

Plus WK is a great stadium for this.

Shhhhh. Don't tell people that. Haha They don't want to know it's all of 2 hours from places like Mayfield and Paducah.

......add in the fact that I drive over 100 miles a day at work this is the last thing I want to do.

Was going to watch online but refuse to pay 15 bucks, for what was always free.

Sounds like K.h.S.A.A. has gotten even more money hungry.

Will still watch the Ohio game on TV for free, as well as the Mich, Ind and Wisconsin games. Louisiana and Tex will have their on free TV later.

I think Georgetown or EKU would be the best place.

The KHSAA will have to think about moving, because WKU could easily host the championship game there every year. WKU really has things rolling in the right direction.
