Thomas has been looking very impressive in the summer camps. I heard that he did very well at the Western KY team camp a week or two ago.

Great. I saw him in Louisville at the PRP camp. Probably just a bad game. He is very smooth. Sorry about starting the Ashland issue, I just remember them year in year out having a very strong team. Shooter is right, high school is cyclic.

For what it is worth I will Say for the 16th Elliott will be on top if they can stay healthy.

Unless you name is Paul Patterson, then not only do you go to state every year, but you don't lose a single game within the region during your tenure.

Good point, LRCW. Paul Patterson's players had great respect for him and for his system. His players wanted to play for him. Although the Patterson years never produced a state championship, the "tradition" was the strongest it has ever been since the 1960-1961 and 1961-1962 Bob Wright-Larry Conley-etals era. There have been some ups since Patterson but, other than the surprise runner-up finish to Paintsville one year, none of real significance.

 

Ashland fans got used to dominating the region after Clark County was moved to the 10th Region. It is difficult for them to accept anything short of annual trips to Rupp Arena. That is understandable. The last few years, as pointed out by GIAT, haven't been too good. The next few years look no better and quite possibly worse. Unrest should be expected and the coach is usually the one who receives the brunt of the discontent. It goes with the territory. And, we should remember that there aren't many Paul Pattersons and Bob Wrights out there any more.

Im sorry but that is not good. Its a downhill slide that I dont accept. Ashland Basketball should not be pleased with mediocrity.

I whole heartedly eo. I bemieve the consolhdation ias hurt both thd football and basketball programs at Ashland.

With both Coles and Putnam as feeders, Ashland, in essence, had twice as many athletes competing and developing in the middle grades. The rivalry between the two was second to none in this area. The basketball games were hotly and, most often, evenly contested and, in football, the annual Kiwanis Bowl always drew near capacity crowds.

 

With this competitive middle layer, many late bloomers had a chance to develop into real contributors at the high school. That is not the case now. Several Ashland posters complain that athletes are earmarked early in their development and the mindset seems to be that these "early chosen" will be the Tomcats of the future. That doesn't leave any room for the late bloomers (and there are many).

 

Also, athletes in the elementary schools looked forward to being Broncos (Coles) or Buccaneers (Putnam). There was a certain level of prestige that went with playing for those schools and battling their "hated" crosstown rivals. It was a good and continuous transition from elementary to Coles or Putnam to the high school. I think that continuity is nonexistent with the single middle school.

 

Of course, population changes resulting in shrinking enrollment caused the change. I don't know for sure but I'll bet that, in many years, Coles and Putnam each had more 7th-9th grade students than now are present in Verity (7th and 8th grades) and Ashland's freshman class.

 

The change, I suppose, was necessary but, nonetheless, the athletic program has suffered because of it.

Consolidation has hurt most schools especially county schools that had 3-4 schools as feeders. Instead of 15-20 starters coming into high school now you have 5.

BTW it did not hurt Patterson that most good players from surrounding schools such as Holy Family somehow ended up at Ashland. I know it is hard to believe but in the past, from I have been told from some old-timers, somehow Ashland got a lot of good players to transfer in. I know that is hard to believe. :thumb:
