The problem is that if it is a rule it should be enforced consistently at every meet. The rule seems stupid but if it is a rule at the state tournament than it should be enforced as such at earlier tournaments. Also, if two officials were OK with it, why does the third get to overrule them??

Maybe I'm looking at it wrong but for Track & Cross Country doesn't it say Headgear is "Permitted unless games committee prohibits"? Is the games committee in this case the GHSA?

I know the pain of this rule first hand. My son's freshman year he finished 3rd in the region and posted a time that would have qualified him for the state track meet as an at large runner; however, after he finished the race at the request of an opposing coach the track official was asked to check the compression shorts my son had under his uniform to make sure they were of a "uniform color". Because my son's black compression shorts had gray stitching he was disqualified. That was a difficult day/week dealing with my son's disappointment.

 

The rule was subsequently changed.

Could be that the 3rd official has different responsibilities to enforce, could be he was one of the officials who has consistently enforced through the season and everyone else didn't.

 

This happens all the time in sports officiating. Basketball has some similar color rules for uniforms and accessories. Sometimes they are enforced differently, not necessarily right, just reality.

 

Ask a handful of basketball officials what the rules are surrounding legal uniforms, one of the things they are required to check during pre-game....I bet you can't find 5 that can give the correct interpretation the first attempt.

Sorry, but that's pure garbage then...not your post but that the officials can be so different on their interpretation. You should be able to show the same uniform to 10 officials and get the same answer from all 10. Same with the head band. People can adjust to rules but they cannot be a moving target...

Track and XC rules - and officials - are cut from the same bolt of cloth.

Did Pete Rozelle come up with this headband ruke?

In high school, our relay team was disqualified once because one of our guys forgot to take off his t-shirt and thus our uniforms "didn't match." We smoked everyone too.

I'm glad I never ran track or CC. There are so many rules about seemingly meaningless things, I don't know how you can keep up and still find time to race:lol2:
