The whole thing is fascinating. It really is about getting folks excited for your candidate. Four years ago, David Williams only got 292,000 votes statewide. Bevin got that many without even counting Jefferson, Fayette, Boone, Kenton, and Campbell counties.

 

2003 and 2015 are strikingly similar in one way: Jefferson County didn't care for Ben Chandler and it didn't care for Jack Conway. In 2007 and 2011, Steve Beshear won Jefferson County by more than 30 points. In 2003, Chandler won it by just 5 points. In 2015, Conway won it by just more than 15 points.

Anyone know how this turnout compares to previous elections cycles? High? Low? About normal?

 

About standard. In 2007 (Beshear v. Fletcher) over a million votes were cast. But just 850,000 were cast in 2011, so statewide we're actually up from four years ago. That's to be expected in a race where there's no incumbent.

Bevin got 61 percent of the votes in NKY and 59.5 percent in "rest of state." Is this a new reality for Democrats? Will the latter number improve when Obama leaves office? Or has Kentucky finally joined the solid Republican South?

Could be the fact that Kentucky government has been lead by the Democrats for 40 years and is a dumpster fire. Maybe the citizens are tired of the same song and dance that has done nothing but put the state in worse shape year after year.

I don't disagree that it's time to change the retirement plans for state workers. However the condition the pension is currently in is not the workers fault. We are in the pile of crap we are now because of politicians.

It wasn't private sector workers fault either it's just a reality. The reality is even if the pension was properly funded defined benefit plans are unsustainable in with the high costs, growing life expectancy and early retirement ages of state workers.

Didn't say it was. However, if your company stole the money out of your 401K is it your fault your 401K is broken?

Yep. I don't think that's the case in all states, but it is in Kentucky.

 

My wife has been teaching since August of 2001. Somewhere between 9% and 10% is automatically taken out of her check and goes to the KTRS. For several years now, we've had an additional 5%-6% put into a 403b.

I am an educator. I am a Republican and a fiscal conservative. I have money taken out of my check every 2 weeks that I will never see again. Stolen from me and lied about to cover it up. I do not have a choice to pay into SS. I have my own deferred compensation set up. I say again a huge chunk of my check is taken out for retirement and stolen from me and i will never see it again. I'm angry as hell about it.
