This was our band's first year competing in 15 years... They missed going to state by 0.3 points. Hopefully we'll be there the next 3 years.

I will say that I firmly believe that Estill County has the best Band Director in Jason Bowels in the STATE!!! The job he's done with the Marching Engineers have been fantastic.

Great job Marching Tigers of Beechwood!!

The Marching Tigers are putting pressure on the football team in the trophy case. How many state championships is this for them?

Every young person who participates in high school marching band in Kentucky is a winner. A tip of the hat, too, to all the band directors who put in countless hours in this most worthwhile endeavor.

Went to a marching band competitions for the first time this year.

A few observations...

1) Some of the "Marching bands" have more electronic sound equipment, mixing boards, amps, generators, Roadies and bigger drum kits than a 70's Lynyrd Skynrd concert.

2) Competitions seems to be more about the theatrics than the marching or the music.

3) You evidently, can't be a competitive band unless you have ATV's or souped up golf carts to pull your equipment to the field.

4) Someone better have a CDL (Yes more bands than you'd think have their own tractor and trailers to haul their ATV's, Amps, Generators, Props and if room allows even some musical instruments on occasion)

5) I actually saw two bands "Kill Girls" during their performance. Jack the Ripper chased Flag Girls around breaking their necks and then slitting ones throat for the grand finale. Another band burnt a Flag Girl at the stake...I guess she was a witch.

6) The worst sports parents you've ever seen or heard have nothing on "Some" Band Parents...they trash talk the other bands throughout their performances and lose their minds if the judges don't agree their band was the best.

7) These kids work their butts off just like any sports team does. Marching on steaming hot pavement in the summer for hours on end, memorizing steps and music that is as complicated as any offensive playbook and practicing 2-3 hours after school almost every day.

Absolutely no private school domination in Band.:sssh:

Band parents are awful.

Band parents are awful.

As you should well know, "There's scholarships at stake, man!"

Thank you for posting this. I was a "Band Geek" back in high school. Qualifying for State, and going down to EKU, was a huge thing for us. Sadly, it seems that more and more schools are giving less and less to the Music Dept. Case in point: In 1996 (my Junior year), Greenup County was a solid 3A band. Roughly 70 members. We went to Florida for a Parade/Marching show competition. This year, GCHS and Raceland combined could barely make a decent sized 1A band. I was told by some Greenup band boosters that the school wouldn't even pay for the band to go to any competitions this year. If this is the case, then it's very sad for all the kids who want to play music, and compete, but can't.
