I probably would have died several times.

 

Like I said in one of the other threads, I've been shot and stabbed. Niether of the wounds were truly life threatening other than the potential for infection. Modern antibiotics took care of that though.

 

The closest I have been to death was when I was 14. My appendix for some strange reason was on my right behind my liver instead of on my left where it belonged. So when I got appendicitis, I had some symptoms of 3 or 4 different things, but not all of any.

 

This was almost 40 years ago and medicine wasn't nearly advanced then as it is now.

 

One of the doctors told my parents, that they weren't a 100% sure what was wrong, but he said he felt certain that if they didn't go in and look I would die. So they were basically going in the next morning to do exploratory surgery to find out what was wrong.

 

A little after midnight my appendix ruptured. No one knew that yet, I just knew that at the moment all my pain was gone.

 

Fortunately I was already prepped and scheduled for surgery in a few hours.

 

It was around a 4 hour operation. They had to pretty much take all of my innards out and clean them. I had peritinitis. My appendix scar is about 8 inches long and goes up and down. They left drainages tubes at the top and bottom so they could drain the infection out. I was only allowed to have liquids, mostly for thirst, there was a tube that went though my nose into my stomach for about a week that sucked everything right back out, because they didn't want anything going though my intestines yet. So all of my nourishment was though IV's.

 

All total I was in the hospital for about 9 weeks. And it wasn't until the last week that they had me a solid food. It was wrestling season and I was at weight so I had little or no fat on my body. I went in at 145 and came out at 115.

 

Had it not been for modern meds, I wouldn't be here.

I'm scared to death of needles as a result, and really just don't like going to hospitals or the doctor's office in general. Have to work really hard to suppress the panic that starts working on me whenever I walk in.

Oh, and I'd probably be in horrible gout pain all the time if it weren't for allopurinol.

Old fashioned frontier pain killer (Bourbon) should help. Some old school medicines still work in some cases.

They had an health fair at work. Checked my cholesterol and it was high. I went to my doctor and he said that if I hadn't come when I did I would have had some type of cardiac event within 6 months. That was around 3 years ago.

I'm sure that may bring on a whole other host of problems when they take my BP right after said shot. Especially if they need to draw my blood. :lol:

I wouldn't be dead but having both hips replaced this year has definitely improved my quality of life.

Type 2 diabetes, so i'd be gone.

If not dead, I'd likely be very sick with the cancer that was removed from my body three years ago.

I have a defibrillator implanted just under the skin. It hasn't saved me yet but it's on stand by waiting to shock my fat butt if my heart gets crazy.

 

On a side note...They should make those things light up, then I could tell everyone that I was Iron Man! !!

I think the NFL should have a Gout Awareness month and the players could all wear grey all month.

 

Gout the unseen killer, we'll at least you wish it would go ahead a kill you sometimes.

I wouldnt have been born. My moms first pregnancy with my older brother would have killed them both.
