mcpapa Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Basketball season for 2015/2016 should provide another exciting year. What should we expect from Holy Cross? Remember, please be constructive.
nkypete Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Another state championship would be nice!:jump:
WKY Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 I believe they will return to state but I don't believe they will repeat. Elizabethtown has fell short two years in a row. I just don't see them doing it again and I can't see Holy Cross beating them again if they have to play them at state.

I just don't see them doing it again and I can't see Holy Cross beating them again if they have to play them at state. Very slim chance they return to state in my opinion. They lost 5 of their top 7 and really only went 7 deep last year. The two they have coming back are good guards, but are small and not really scorers. I'm not sure they are top 5 in the ninth this year. They will compete, but I don't think they "repeat". The ninth has some really good teams coming back and is very balanced from 1-10. The top 3 (Holmes, Highlands and Ryle) should be the front runners if they play to their potential.

You're right they did lose a lot, but it was 4 of their top 7 not 5. I just checked last year's roster. I didn't realize Deja Turner was a senior. I thought she was a junior like McClendon. Losing Deja Turner and Ally Mayhaus will really hurt, but I think the others can be easily replaced. I really like McClendon and Tucker and think they will play bigger roles this year. You're most likely right about them being in the lower part of the top 5. I'm not a 9th region expert and I'm sure you know more than I do about the programs up there.

But they have never really been big scorers and without the inside presence and the fact that they aren't great shooters, it will make it tough for them to score enough to carry them against good teams. Great defenders, ball handlers and Bball IQ, but I think they will struggle to score and without the bigs, they won't be able to sit back in the zone and let it come to them like they did last year. They will have to get out and make things happen and that may make them vulnerable against good ball handling teams.

I'll say it again......most underrated player in the 9th region last year.

HardWoodFan Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 Holy Cross will start the year with one of best point guards in the region in McClendon when it comes to moving the ball and dishing it. They certainly lost a lot to graduation so can't be at the top of the 9th this year. But they have some good young talent, good coaching, and perhaps the edge of returning players in possession of state championship rings. They'll compete.

With the loss to the HC roster who will McClendon be dishing to for scoring? I'm not familiar with the girls left on the HC roster so I'm curious..
Panther15 Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 This years Holy Cross team will be a different team from the past few years, that being said a lot of people are down playing them McClendon is in my opinion the top point guard in the 9th. She alone will carry this team to a lot of wins this year, Tucker will also pull the same weight as McClendon and win some games for this team. They might be small compared to years past but they will be quick and are well coached they will beat a lot of people they are not predicted to beat, (by a lot of people on this site.) All that being said i being a fan of this team would not put them a top the region soley because of who and what they lost but they will surprise a lot of people!
CAP Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 With the players coming form all over they should be fine.

I agree they will be better than some think. But I just don't know how they are going to score. They weren't a high scoring team last year and McClendon and Tucker are not big scorers. AND all the defensive focus that was on Turner and the Bigs will now be on those two. McClendon is an outstanding PG and I think she will have a good year, but she's had a lot of help (which was perfect for her). I don't know if she's a big scorer when she becomes the focus. I really like both McClendon and Tucker as players and kids, but I just don't know where the scoring will come from. And the bigs aren't there any longer to rely on the defensive stops they've counted on in the past to pull out games. I wish the kids luck!
CKC Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 After watching Mclendon this summer, it seems that she has been working on her scoring. She played very well and was hard to stop driving to the basket.
RCC9 Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 After watching Mclendon this summer, it seems that she has been working on her scoring. She played very well and was hard to stop driving to the basket. I think she's always been hard to stop when driving to the basket one on one, but if she faces a zone with focus on her, will she be able to score? Again, I love the kid, but I think teams will focus on stopping her and that may cause issues with scoring for HC. Again, in the summer, you don't see a lot of zone and she has other talented players on her summer team. So you can't really leave your player to help as much like you can in HS. My assessment has no bearing on how good of a player I think she is or how good she can be at the next level. She just doesn't have the same level of talent around her as she did last year and when she plays in the summer.
