I much prefer that number than goals and assists only because it shows just how important the player is to the team....but as mentioned many times by many people, opponent strength has to be examined......are 4 goals and a couple of assists, say against Beechwood who is in their first year and struggling better than a goal against a top NKY team?

 

It all comes down to what parameters they use to determine it......is it numbers only, numbers and team record (if you have good goal numbers on a team that has a winning percentage around 50%), is strength of schedule considered.....

 

To me, the bolded is the biggest factor, unfortunately I am not sure how you ever narrow it down to a handful of stats that would be fair to all the players. Another one I typically look at is, how important some of the goals were, did they win a match or get the team back in one, or even salvage a result. If we start talking about how important a player is to a team we kinda teeter more towards a MVP and they are not always the best offensive player. I think if you look at 5 of the players that keep coming up when people talk offensive production you could easily slice and dice the numbers as to make any of the 5 look to be the best of the group. Here are some of the things I consider when looking at these players, and by no means, do I have any idea how you come up with an answer.

 

Litzler(11/10)/Day(8/7) - Hands down, playing on the most talented team in NKY but also playing what is considered to be one of the toughest schedules, Maher 6.98. Are their actual minutes on the field considerably lower than others because they play on such a talented team, spreading the wealth and giving them fewer chances than some of the other boys that are playing most of the match because their squad is not as deep as CCH. Do they benefit more from being on a more talented team because it limits the opposing teams ability to focus the majority of their defensive efforts on them? Does having more talented players on your team help to get you more quality chances rather than trying to make more things happen on your own?

 

Morgan(18/6)/Snow(18/8) - These two have almost identical offensive numbers YTD and a fairly similar SOS, 3.56/4.52, respectively. You could easily make the statement that their teams run the offense through them, comments in an earlier thread pointed out the high percentage of total goals they both had a hand in for their team. Some could say that this role benefits them because they have more chances to put up big numbers. Others might claim that although they are the focal point of their offense, they are also the focal point of the opponents defense..... both are valid points. Might it be harder to put up these numbers if you are forced to create more of your own chances than if you were on a more talented team? Although playing almost every minute in their matches, is it always in this offensive role? There are times that their roles change based on the game situation and the mix of players that are on the pitch.

 

Wend(18/3) - Wend's offensive stats show that he tends to be more of a typical scorer when you compare his numbers to those of the others. In terms of his team impact, he has about half their goals but just a small portion of their assists. Although the majority of the comments I made for Morgan, and Snow, would also apply for Wend, I did not group them together because of these few things. Conner seems to be more balanced offensively than Scott and Cooper, and their stats appear to reflect this. I also feel that the schedule Conner plays is not nearly as strong as the others. With the success Charlie is having this season I would be surprised if he does not finish with 30+ goals and I think he has an outside chance of hitting double digit assists.

 

 

I just realized that I have made a bunch of comments but have not done anything to help figure out who is deserving of being the OPOY.

OPOY could be a handful of candidates this year. Usually there is only 2 stand outs that really stand out by the end of the year. Too bad it's the coaches that vote... I'm sure there is alot of politics during the voting process.

YC, I like the analysis you provided. I don't know most of the boys mentioned in this thread. Even when we play their team I am clueless about who is who. I just know what I see #XX doing at the time. I am sorry I missed the Cov Cath match last night.

 

One thing I'd like to mention about Wend, since we played Conner recently, is his size and strength. That requires a different approach from a defender and creates different problems for them than say someone who is lightening quick. Wend is a big, strong boy and uses his body well. For instance, on one of his goals against us the defender came in from behind and tried to push him with his body. He should have just stayed goal-side and forced a pass but Wend got him off balance and set up an easy shot on goal.

 

I know this isn't helpful for deciding OPOY, but I have to post every so often or I feel more unimportant than everyone tells me I already am.

If I am allowed to coach the team stepover threw out, he will be used as a target forward. He is the only one on this list that truly fits this mold.

Sounds like someone got their feelings hurt and nice shot at a high school kid. Those that know soccer in NKY will certainly put him in their top 10 list.

No hurt feelings and I have only been involved in NKY soccer 7 particularly HS soccer for 17 years. Now I will eliminate my shot at the kid and say that IF HHS has any defensive players on any top 10 list, my nomination would be Tommy Steppe. He was most visible in a tight game and had the most impact.

They had him up top at the beginning of the season but decided he was needed more on the defensive side.

For St. Henry, I think offensively that DJ Sanders (ST) and Ian Manahan (CM) are strong for the cru. I think Sanders has about 14 goals and several assists. Defensively, I know that Carter Kunstek (CB) and Will Norris (LB) are solid in the back.

I hear you but it is NKY top players and not the top players from each team.....so only seeing St H once when CCH beat them, I would ask if they Are the top in NKY ?

BGP Fan, I don't think that is what OTB said at all.

 

He said they may be tops and even asked for some supporting stats as a way to validate the claim.

 

In his initial post, he did offer up his teams defense, and then supported it with some stats as to why he thought they were deserving.

 

The basis behind his comments is just an attempt to keep the list at a reasonable number, not the 30+ that the initial "Top 10" turned into. By no means am I saying that these players mentioned are not good, and might very well be deserving, but one would think that when someone says player A is solid, most would not use this type of description when talking about a top player in a given region.

Not discouraging anyone......not everyone sees every team and player, so trying to get facts and stats to help everyone understand why they are tops....it will be a fact that some of the top players on some teams may not start on other teams.....not even hinting that this applies to any of the players mentioned so far....

The struggle with voting with awards is too many people only want to compare stats, there are many other things that a player of the year should be, including a leader or a rock for his team. my struggle iif I had a vote, would be how do you vote for any covington catholic defender, when in reality there strength is as a group of 5, not individually. The down side here is they are so good, you don't know how good they are individually. My own opinion, is if a player is voted player of the year, you are station without them that teams overall record is significantly worse. In the case of the covington catholic defense, if you take one player out I'm not sure there overall record changes.

 

Offensively: I think snow (where would cooper be without him up top?) wend, dj sanders, littler, and Morgan are all good too.
