Soccer Coach Wannabe

Kentucky used to have a longer overtime period. About 6 or 7 years ago they reduced it to what it is now. My understanding is that the KHSAA wants the overtime period to be the same in the play-offs as the regular season. They felt 30 minutes was too long on a school night when many games don't start until 8 pm, and outside the 3 main areas many teams have to travel an hour or two to get to there district and regional games. Thus why we have what we have.

Northern Kentucky members making the all state team were: cooper: snow cov. cath: lamb, vogt, schutt ryle: Bedel, Crupper, Jordan st henry: manahan, kunstek NCC: Muck Highlands: Rom, Dolezal Villa: McQueen Pendleton: Dewald Interestingly the player everyone was upset about not being on the all region team, also isn't on the all state team.

I heard rumors the ALL State team meetings were this past weekend. Probably will here something mid week is my guess. The all state team is done by the state coaches association. The KHSAA has an all tournament team, selected by each represented teams coach.

I personally think the all region team is a good thing for the players. Yes some players get missed, yes some players make the team when they maybe aren't good at others, but kids ARE at least getting recognized. Remember, some of the kids you are saying shouldn't make the team, play on less skilled teams. Who's to say they couldn't be a better player on a more skilled team. We can't disqualify them because there team lost to many games, that's not fair either. Tell me, what other REGION in the state has an All Region Team. What other REGION in the state has an banquet to honor for these kids to go to and get honored......................The answer is NONE. Instead of griping about who was missed, let's recognize the other side, this region at least cares enough to make the effort to recognize players for soccer. Coaches will be coaches, they will vote for a multitude of reasons, we can't change that. Some of these players it may be there only recognition they will ever receive, that is okay. If they made the list, they were at least noticed by some coaches. There is a lot of competition in this region, I'm sure that Highlands, Ryle, St. Henry and others nominated players that didn't make the team. We don't here those people complaining. Looking at the list the striker competition and goalie competition was tough for voting this year. Remember the player your complaining didn't make the team, played several positions this year, meaning different coaches saw him play different ways. This will affect his votes, and his final position was striker, which was a stacked position. Ever year some one gets missed, we don't even no for sure if he was nominated for all region. I was told by one coach he was surprised at how few nominations came from that specific team, the point is unless the coach tells us he nominated him we will never know. I just think instead of blasting the situation, let's keep perspective and be happy that the players in our region at least get a chance to be recognized.

8 th region had redraw yesterday for some reason. It does appear SK will be playing North Oldham

Each round the field size changes so for instance, districts is 55 to 80 by 100 to 120, regionals is 60 to 80 by 110 to 120, and state games are 65 to 80 by 110 to 120. The state is responsible for monitoring this through the various AD's in the region I believe. You can see the soccer field requirements online at KHSAA

Field usage, and lack of available field time at the 3 or 4 schools able to host regional has caused the first round regional games to be played on home sites.

Last year, all games were not held at Dixie as first round games were held on the site of district winners, I believe Ryle played at Ryle, and NCC might have played at Highlands. I think St henry played Cooper at St Henry also.

Don't assume to many things, we know what happens............Highlands, St henry and CCH are all gifted 1 seeds in the regional with the soft districts, but don't be surprised to see Cooper as the one seed, especially since that district is playing on the tiny basketball sized soccer field. That will really throw the region for a loop, as who will want to face two seeded Ryle.

Two games early in the season can be a good idea, if the coach is willing to use the bench and test his players on the bench. You can't just take 22 players, you need to use 22 players. Yes, it could cost you a game early, but look at the other side which is allows you to start planning for the play-offs, which is really the only time wins and losses count. It can help you early get a gauge on the depth of your bench or maybe even lack of depth, which could help you plan for later in the season.

If you were at the game you should have noticed the ryle bench was full of injured. I saw one on crutches, one in an arm split, and one with a back brace. Parents stated they were our four varsity players, three who at one time started this year. Also, it appeared one f their starting defenders went out in first half, and never played again, hopefully he is okay. Could explain why so many JV guys are playing

I too agree that a 16 game schedule would be a perfect fit for the freshman teams to play each fall. The unfortunately is little chance of only playing freshman games during the week though, most freshman teams play the bulk of there schedule on the weekends. Remember schools could care less about club soccer, just the nature of the beast. Freshman/JV tournaments: Would be nice to see on larger fields, but its really a pipe dream to think it could happen. Lack of fields and there availability, and shortage on officials doesn't make this a realistic option. Schools with grass fields wont take the games due to wear and tear, and schools with turf won't field availability enough to pick up the games, and we haven't even mentioned the official shortage. And finally, both boone and kenton counties have the no play on sunday rule which makes the task even harder.

Ryle has had a tough week, and just placed a rivalry game. I will go with a 1-1 tie, but wouldn't be surprised to see a 1-0 win by either team

Look at all three ryle rosters, only 8 total freshman in the entire program. Per a former parent they would have had no freshman team this year without 8 th graders. This parent has said The school board has a policy they can only use middle schoolers if they don't have enough freshman to fill team. Not allowed to cut freshman. Have spoke to two coaches at rival schools who stated there freshman class was way less this year also, think. It must just be a down year

No, they have been in place a long time (10 years), but as thatguy404 stated, they were re discussed, and re instituted by the association after the Scott issue four years ago. Like anything else, coaches who want to circumvent the rule will always find away or try to ignore. The problem is to punish a team you need to ban them from the tournament, and then you punish even more innocent players

Actually the Coaches association rules state that in order to play in either the freshman tournament or JV tournament a player must have participated in a % of that teams games played. I believe they must have played in 75 % of the games. So for instance if you are a freshman, you are only eligible for the tournament if the player played in % 75 of that freshman teams games up to the time of the tournament

polls needed to be completed by media not coaches. Too many coaches don't see enough teams to rank them fairly. Too many coaches don't have time to pay attention to research properly for a ranking. Rankings are nice to see, but usually not anywhere close to realistic

that is definitely debatable.The problem was across the state there was an unusually high # of red cards. The state took the high rode to try to eliminate red cards. I may not agree, but understand the response. The issue i see is the high number of cards both red and yellow for decent as a problem. This to me should be coach controlled by putting players on the bench. Don't be shocked if those numbers don't change to see a yellow card accumulation penalty down the road. Several states around are experimenting with this already

State went away from differentiating red cards several years ago, straight red, or two yellows equals red are all automatic 2 games minimum

There is no website. It was put in place by the athletic directors back in the early 90's i believe. At the time, the intent was to promote the region in all sports, and create regional rivalries. The schools are divided by size into 3 divisions, a plaque is created and given to the school for each sport they win, for example who ever wins the three soccer divisions will each get a plaque to hang at school, which includes a team photo. There are penalties for a school and sport that chooses not to participate if they are members of the NKAC. I'm sure there is more to the organization this is the general information i have been told by coaches

The 27 th is a Tuesday night, that is traditionally a boy's night. The idea of a varsity doubleheader is a great idea, but extremely difficult to schedule. It usually requires one team to be willing to give up a home game, unless the schedule works out right. The only down side to a varsity doubleheader is the JV and freshman teams get smaller attendance, and if you have to many games where they are separate they then don't feel like they are a apart of the program.

They may have upped the regular season totals from a few years ago. Yes they do get more scrimmages than Kentucky, last time i spoke to someone. Walnut Hills is basically private, you have to pass one of the hardest entrance test possible to get in the school. Yes Moeller played Ryle, I am not saying it never happens. It you look over a 10 year period, you will see mostly private schools playing mostly private schools. For about a 4 year period, Ryle had to travel to Indianapolis to get games, my assumption is the Ohio schools weren't playing them for whatever reason. It is just really hard for a public school to get a private school on there schedule. I bet if you look at Ryles last 10 years, you wont see many games with St X, trinity, lex cath and others. I bet if you look at st henry and cov cath you will see them playing those games every year.

Don't drill a coach for a schedule until you have tried to schedule a team yourself. The scheduling process isn't as easy as it may sound. For instance in Ohio you get 12 games, in Kentucky you get 21. This tends to be a major reason why teams in Kentucky don't get many Ohio games. Ohio teams also have more games they are bound to that most Kentucky teams. Many Kentucky coaches have tried to schedule Ohio teams, but are unable to get on the very tight docket. It really becomes a matter of right place, right time. Don't give Cov Cath coaches that much credit, they have a built in advantage over most Kentucky Schools................they are private. Private schools will always play private schools, especially the Ohio ones because they have many public schools who wont play them. Protect your own. If you look at Cov Caths Ohio schedule, besides Anderson it is mostly private high schools..................those same schools schedule mostly private schools even in Ohio. Scheduling becomes a hard task at times. My last point is don't read too much into the maher rankings. Most coaches could care less about the rankings, during the season or during scheduling. I have several friends who are coaches, and they tell me all the time they dont pay attention to the rankings at all. It merely is a tool for us fans to use, and see how teams compare.
