Athletes are no more role models than politicians are. The days of athletes as positive role models are LONG over with.

 

Agree. Your role models should be your parents and/or grandparents, most of the time.

But young athletes do look up to these people and model how they play, right or wrong. Where is the line?

JMO, but that falls on the parents. If a kid looks up to an athlete as a role model, that's poor parenting IMO.

 

And emulating a batting stance is a far cry from viewing them as a role model.

 

There is nothing wrong with a child viewing an athlete as a role model. There are plenty of men who play pro sports who ARE role models. I know them personally.

 

That being said, Adam Jones is not one of them.

He is lucky he wasn't suspended. But at the same time Cooper wasn't an innocent victim on that play also. If anyone watched the video of

The entire play they would see Cooper punching Pac Man in the throat twice while thy ran down the field.

I think many long-timers would disagree. Like a lot of us before we had kids we had an idea of how we would do things. We all found out that what we THOUGHT and what we found out was real world were sometimes two different things.

 

It's not a criticism. We all went through it. I just chuckle when you make definitive statements like "if kids look up to an athlete....bad parenting." It's not that simple. It's how you react to them logically being influenced by certain people that makes you a good or bad parent.

The NFL is a joke! I had to make my son go in the other room when they kept showing the replay. I would suspend Jones for the season. Definitely not what you want your kid to see when your trying to teach them about sportsmanship.

No kidding. There is a guy in a wheelchair for the rest of his life because of Pacman and his posse. Total punk. If he blows out his knee tomorrow, it wouldn't bother me one bit. How a guy who did what he did Sunday and with his track record did not get a suspension is beyond me...but it is the NFL and who knows what they are thinking.
