Neither Gwynn nor Carew had much power. Imagine what their career stats would have looked like if they had been on Bonds' vitamin regimen. I never considered Rose in the same class as a pure hitter as Gwynn and Carew. His durability, hustle, and longevity were his ticket to fame.

 

I would probably rank Frank Robinson, Willie Mays, and Henry Aaron as the greatest hitters of my lifetime. Back to Barry Bonds, how many more homers would that trio have hit if they had the same "supplements" that Bonds had available to him. I don't remember how much Robinson's numbers dropped off before he retired, but Aaron and Mays suffered a sharp decline late in their careers in their power and batting averages.

Everyone that you mentioned would be a good pick. I was talking just pure hitter, not necessarily power hiters. Carew and Rose were mostly singles/double hitters w/o much power (and Rose with more base hits than anyone to ever play the game). Who is Ted Williams????????? I have never heard of Stan Musial or Ty Cobb either. Those fellows must not have played during "my lifetime" or maybe I was just too young to remember seeing them play.

 

Seriously, I agree that Ted Williams was the greatest hitter of all time. Musial, Cobb, Ruth, Gehrig, Hornsby, and Speaker were not far behind, but I am too young to have seen any of them play.

 

Another great hitter who I did see play was Wade Boggs, but like Rose, Carew, and Gwynn, Boggs did not hit for much power. But Boggs was a very tough out.

Barry Bonds hit #715 in 2,000 less at bats then Hank Aaron did

When I think of great hitters, I think of hitters who hit for average with power. Just looking at batting averages of recent players (as in guys that I saw play), Rose, Boggs, Carew, and Gwynn top my list.

IMO, it's a sad comment on society when a person has gained a milestone by way of ILLEGAL means (and I didn't need to inject him myself, he admitted using the cream and the clear) and yet many still applaud him for his efforts. Way to be a shining example of the right way to do things Barry...

It is sad... if the world (and baseball) were only as pure as this comment.

 

Baseball created its OWN culture by glamourizing Home Run freaks like Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. Bonds is nothing more than another piece of the puzzle.. And part of me says, hey, why not glamourize it. HRs are fun, they bring people to the park (which baseball struggles with), it is interesting, etc... But, baseball did not figure a jerk would be at the heels of passing up the legends of the game. Bonds got into something many many others were doing (not saying it is right) and benefited from the results; same for a multitude of other players the past 20 years. Baseball is just so stat driven and lives in the past with former players, the idea of a player actually breaking some of these beloved stats irritates some to no end (whether it is legitimate or not).

I'm still waiting for the proof that Barry Bonds has taken steroids. I hear a lot of speculation and accusations, but I don't see any proof. When there is proof that Bonds cheated, then all of you can wine and moan that Bonds cheated and he needs an asterisk or a lifetime ban from baseball. Until there is proof, Bonds is nothing more than a superstar hitter with a bad personality. Go Barry - I hope you hit 1,000 home runs.

I don't think anyone's ever alleged such. But it can turn what would be a routine fly ball into a 400 foot homer.

But it can't make a person hit the ball....hence...it'd be another strike.

All this is true, but the biggest thing is recovery time from nagging injuries. While it may cost some 15 days here and there, he's hitting 5-6 home runs.

 

Hand/eye coordination, maybe not...however, hitting a baseball is all about bat speed and roids will definitely help increase that. Look at some of these guys forearms.
