May 29, 200620 yr I have my suspicions. C'mon, don't be so blind. How old his he? And to still be that dominant? It's not like he's got a Nolan Ryan physique. Its not like he has a steroid built frame with 3% body fat either. Roger Clemens would be the farthest from steroid probable as anyone in my book. He was just blessed with a golden right arm.
May 29, 200620 yr The issue with roids as I understand has as much to do with increased recovery time from injuries and fatigue as it does with what we usually think of - muscle. While one major leaguer is struggling in August physically, the other on roids is "fresher" , thus, an unfair advantage.

Ryan stayed in game shape because of an incredible workout regimen. Clemens looks (and has always looked) like he just got home from Dunkin' Donuts. Don't be that blind.

And when you consider the act of pitching — ripping apart the muscles in the shoulder, bicep, tricep and other associated muscles — the wear on the frame is far more significant that what an everyday player would do. Pitchers stand to gain the most — decreased recovery time — from using. That makes it easy to accept that many more pitchers are likely guilty than everyday players. Eric Gagne, anyone?

That's why he is considered one of if not the greatest pitcher of all time - players that like don't come along all the time. He is a freak of natural talent. How does everybody else feel about this? I'm not buying it that Roger is on the needle. An alcoholic maybe, but not on the needle.

May 29, 200620 yr Jim, I seriously doubt any pitcher in MLB works harder on off days than Clemens. Maybe so, but I still have my suspicions. How is it, if he works so hard, that he has remained doughy all these years? Shouldn't he have lost some of that baby fat?
May 29, 200620 yr I still think Tony Gwynn is the greatest hitter I saw in my lifetime. I have no doubt he would've hit .400 a few times in the AL. I would agree with Gwynn being great, I would have to throw Rod Carew in that group along with Pete Rose.
May 29, 200620 yr I don't think of Clemens and doughy, now Sid Fernandez and doughy I can dig. Bonds may be a huge jerk, and I hope he gets no higher than #2 on the list but he's still a sensational hitter, one of the best eyes ever, too bad noone likes him. At least I can say I saw Mac's 62 and Bonds' 715 live.
May 29, 200620 yr I would agree with Gwynn being great, I would have to throw Rod Carew in that group along with Pete Rose.Neither Gwynn nor Carew had much power. Imagine what their career stats would have looked like if they had been on Bonds' vitamin regimen. I never considered Rose in the same class as a pure hitter as Gwynn and Carew. His durability, hustle, and longevity were his ticket to fame. I would probably rank Frank Robinson, Willie Mays, and Henry Aaron as the greatest hitters of my lifetime. Back to Barry Bonds, how many more homers would that trio have hit if they had the same "supplements" that Bonds had available to him. I don't remember how much Robinson's numbers dropped off before he retired, but Aaron and Mays suffered a sharp decline late in their careers in their power and batting averages.
May 29, 200620 yr Who cares..Let me know when he breaks the record which last I looked was held by Henry Aaron. I hope he doesn't get there and don't think he will get past the very classy and non-steroid using Aaron

You ever heard of a guy named Ted Williams? Take a look at his numbers and the time he was away from baseball serving this country and then you tell me who the best hitter of all time might be. IMO Ted Williams is 2nd to no one.
May 29, 200620 yr Ok Barry Bonds most likely did steroids, but you can't say that the only reason that he hits home runs is because he is huge. If I buffed up and took steroids I probably could not hit a ball much farther than I can now. He obviously knows how to swing a bat at the right time and he has been doing something right for the past 20+ seasons. My hat goes off to Bonds. Congratulations. It's a milestone no matter how tainted his image is.
